Purrs for Georgie

UPDATE THURS PM - We had to bring Georgie from her vet to another one open 24 hours.  She is not responding to her treatment as well as they would like.The ER vet suggested pancreatitis or perhaps hyperthyroid as the reason behind her blood sugar issues.  She will see an internal medicine specialist on Friday. Please keep her in your thoughts.

We have not posted this week cuz Georgie, who has diabetes,  has not been well.  She had constipation issues last week and then some  dehydration.  She seemed to perk up but then on Wednesday, Mom got real worried  and took her to the vet.  Georgie was very lethargic, vomited and wouldn't eat.

She is in ketoacidosis from too little insulin or her body is not processing it right.  We caught her in the early stages so she will hopefully not have to stay a full week at the vet like last time.  This is very serious so please put your paws together and purr and pray for her to be well.

Georgie is home and doing well.  She will now get sub c fluids twice a week. The vet thinks that dehydration caused her constipation.

UPDATE - WED AM - The vet took an x-ray before surgery to see what she was dealing with since he had passed something during the night.  She felt that she could manipulate the rest of the mass without surgery and did - it was fur.  A big glob of fur was blocking his intestines.  I still don't know if it is still mega colon or if this was what caused all the problems.  We will take him home today.Thanks so very much for all the purrs and prayers for him.  So glad he did not need the surgery.

Snowball has megacolon and  is still at the vets.  They have tried enemas and manual extraction but he still has a mass in his colon.  If nothing has changed by Tues morning, they will do surgery to remove the fecal mass.  Hopefully if all goes well, he will come home on Wed of this week.

Please rev up your purrs and prayers for him.  He is a very special boy.  All his whitesters  are very upset that he is gone.  They are acting like totally lost without him..  He is their benevolent leader and father figure and they miss him terribly.

11:20am Mon UPDATE - Our Georgie has diabetic ketoacidosis and will be getting IV fluids for 3 days at the vet and then they will regulate her insulin!  Didn't see any symptoms of this other than drinking a little more.  Our finances are a bit stretched due to Ivy's constant need to go to the vet so we will be having an auction this weekend - on Facebook and another on my blog.  Will keep you updated.  Thanks for caring!

Our sweet Georgie is not feeling well today. Mom noticed she  had lost a little weight and was being a finicky eater.  Changing foods and more attention seemed to help but this morning she did not want to eat anything.  She is also sitting by the water bowl a lot.  Those are the only symptoms - weight loss, lack of appetite and drinking more - all signs of Chronic Renal Disease.  She is only 8.  Mom gave her a couple of homeopathic remedies and she seemed to perk up a bit.

One of our vets opens at 3pm on Sunday so we will see how she is doing.  If things don't look any better, Mom will bring her in today rather than wait until Monday.  Please keep her in your thoughts and send lots of purrs!

Purrs for Yoko Please

UPDATE - Long day and thank you all for your purrs.  I had to work tonight after taking Yoko to the new vet who was very kind and gentle with her.  She does have some dental issues (tooth abscess)  that will need to be addressed but he did find bacteria and crystals in her urine - so we are on 2 weeks of antibiotics, which will help her mouth and UTI plus something called D mannose to help rid deep bacteria from her bladder and possibly kidneys - I guess bacteria are attracted to this and attach to the D mannose and get flushed out.  Then he put her on another immune boosting algae supplement. We have to bring a urine sample back in 10 days and then see what is going on. Yoko already seems a bit perkier and hopefully we can stop this low grade infection once and for all. 

In June Yoko who has CRF and high normal thyroid, had symptoms of a UTI and the vet started her on antibiotics.  I continued it for 4 weeks as she also had white blood cells in her urine.  We stopped the antibiotic and withing a week her symptoms were back.  Another round of antibiotics and this time she seemed to be over it but today the symptoms are back after 2 1/2 weeks of no symptoms.  We will be trying a new holistic vet to see if he can find out what this is.  I don't want to have to keep dosing her with antibiotics.

She went thru this last year in August with major symptoms - incontinence, vomiting, straining - the works.  After 4 weeks of antibiotics she was much much better but all along the urine showed no bacteria altho one vet said if it was in the kidney, the urine might not show any bacteria.

We are just hoping we can help make her more comfy and find out what is going on here.  Keep her in your thoughts.

Purrs for Chica Please

UPDATE - Sat 3/2
Chica is having a good day today.  Don't really know what this means but she ate a little, drank her water and even strolled through the hosue to come into the living room.  I had a box on its side with a cat food box inside the box and she loves to sit here.  I took it away since she was not using it anymore.  She went right over to where the box was so I went and got it.  She got inside like she always does.  She walked back to the litterbox and then went inside her hidy spot.  She is resting and breathing much better.  I have a cat carrier on the floor in my bedroom with a heat pad inside and the door is off.  This is her safe place and she has been here since she came home form the vets.  As long as she is comfy and breathing well I am going to let her be.  She is alert and happy to be with us still.




Our beloved Chica was having a very hard time breathing today so I took her to the vet I took Snowball.  They did an x-ray. She has fluid around her lungs and in her abdomen.  They aspirated the fluids from her lung area and she came thru that fine.  She is still at the vet and I will go back to take her home tonight.  I was not ready to put her down and we may be able to give her a diuretic to help this fluid from building up for a while.

Doesn't look good but they can look at the fluid in her and tell where it came from.  If it is congestive heart failure it doesn't look promising but I wanted her home.  I was not ready to let her go.

She had to be in oxygen - they were very gentle with her and whenever she got too stressed and her breathing was worse they put her in oxygen. The oxygen tank was a small clear plastic tub with a hole cut for the oxygen tube and a cover on top. I went in to see her before they sedated her for the needle and she was alert and knew me.  She popped right up with her head above the top and came over to me.  This is so hard - I know you all know how I feel.

She may only have a few days or weeks left.  At least this way she is more comfortable for as long as she has.  Please keep us in your purrs in the days to come.

UPDATE - Late evening on  2/28
Chica is home now and resting comfortably.  She is frail and weak and unfortunately has had both her sides shaved to do the ultrasound and the needle aspiration.  Her fluids is either the heart or from a cancer so time is short.  She cannot take Lasix due to her kidney failure so I will try dandelion tea as a diuretic.  We will take this one day at a time and see how she feels. If she is at all uncomfortable we will send her to the Bridge with our love.

Chica Checking In...

 Since I am feeling a little bit better, Mom said it was OK that I did the blog post today.  I had a good night last night and sat with Mom while she watched TV and even sat with Pop this morning on the sofa.

I had to go back to the vet today for more sub c fluids.  I am on a tiny bit of pain medication cuz they think I may have mild panrcreatitis along with antibiotics for my UTI.  I don't like taking either but Mom gets it in me.

 I am eating on my own but Mom has to put out 3 different kinds of food on my plate to get me to eat one of them.  Sometimes I take a bit of all three.  I like being spoiled like this but the other cats are jealous and they try to eat all my food before me.

Mom leaves the PTU in the living room with the door off so I can use it as my hidy place.  I like sleeping in here.  I really appreciate all the kind words, purrs, prayers and donations.  Mom spent alot of money having me in the hospital for 3 days in ICU having all kinds of tests done.  I will be going back to the vets this week for more fluids and to check my pee.

Since I am so old, Mom is worried about me still.  Please keep those purrs and prayers coming that I get better and she can stop worrying.  We will be sending lots of our own purrs for the many cats on CB that are not feeling well too.  We appreciate all of you and thank you so much.

Update 5pm Tuesday

The vet felt that Chica would benefit from another night  getting IV fluids so we can pick her up on Wed.  Her kidney values have come down but they want more of a decrease.  She is alert, loving the attention from the staff and being very feisty.  I would prefer her to be more stable when she came home so I am OK with this - I just don't want to bring her home too soon and then have to bring her back.   I miss her soo much.  It doesn't seem like home without this cat. We will have a special post tomorrow when she comes home!

Tues Afternoon

I visited Chica today and she is doing better - they will check her kidney values later to day to see if she can  come home this afternoon. She was alert early this AM and let the vet pet her.  Chica even swatted at her when she tried to touch her belly.  The vet also thinks she may also have pancreatitis - her belly is still tender.  I may just let them treat it as that and let her come home to regain her strength before going in for an x-ray or ultra sound.  I think it would be too much for her now.  Has anybody had any experience with pancreatitis?

UPDATE - Tues AM

The vet called this morning and it looks like Chica has a very bad bladder infection - her urine tested positive for bacteria so they have her on antibiotics.  Poor baby - I was so worried about her but this would explain the tenderness in her belly area.  I will go visit her later this morning but she may stay the day at the vets.  Keep the purrs coming!

UPDATE
Thank you all for your kind words, purrs and prayers for Chica.  I stopped to visit her late today at the vets and she is doing a bit better - her temp has come up and she was alert and grumpy but has not eaten.  Her tummy is still tender - has anyone had experience  with acute gastritis with chronic renal failure?  I hated to leave her there but obviously the IV fluids were doing her good.  I don't know how this happened so fast - she had fluids three days ago and was herself on Sunday.  We will see how she is in the morning and if her tummy is still hurting.  The next step would be an x-ray or ultra sound but the vet does not want to put her thru this if they don't need to.  I just hope this is related to the CRF and will turn around with fluids. At her age (20) I need to be prepared for any outcome.


I guess I spoke too soon when I said a few days ago that Chica was doing well.  She crashed this morning and I took her to the vet - she was vomiting foam and her belly hurt.

Her temp was low and she was dehydrated.  They did blood work which is normally very hard to do with her but she was feeling so bad it was easy today.  Her BUN and Creatine are high along with amylase.
She will stay at the vet's so they can give her IV fluids and keep an eye on her.  Her temp has already come back up.  They gave her Pepcid for her tummy.  We will see how she is later today but most likely she will stay overnight at the vets.

If she does not respond to this (which I think she will) they will have to do an x-ray to see if there is something in her tummy causing her pain.

We could use lots of purrs and prayers.  I do want her to be around and feeling well for some time to come.  I will keep you posted.

Thoughtful Thursday

Please send all your purrs and prayers for our 18 year old Chica - we had a rough night last night and I didn't think she was going to make it. She has chronic renal failure and last night she began vomiting watery foam, drooling, licking her lips. She was crying and growling and very uncomfortable. Her paws were cold and her breathing was shallow.

We called the ER for pets and they felt she was dying and said she may not make the night so we opted to keep her home with us giving her homeopathic remedies for kidney toxicity and nausea. I slept on the sofa near her. She refused to let me hold her and finally found a small spot to curl up in.

I got up during the night and she had gotten inside her basket and fell asleep. She was awake and aware this morning and so far has not vomited. She keeps drinking water and has peed. She even purred for me.

She will go to the vet and hopefully get some SubQ fluids to make her more comfortable. She had been diagnosed three years ago but had been doing well. This episode was quite sudden and severe. Has anyone else had experience with CRF? I had thought her disease progression would be slower than this. Thanks for your help.

Update Fri 9/18
We finally got IV subq fluids in Chica - it went easier than I thought. She is quite feisty even for her age and does not like to be messed with! She is wiped out and sleeping but ate a little and seemed more active and alert. We have a vet appointment on Tues to give her a complete check up and see what we can be doing to help her be more comfortable. The vet was out sick today so we had to make other arrangements to get her fluids. I guess I will be giving her the fluids myself which I have done before with other cats but not her.
