The Buddy System on Tabby Tuesday

Tabitha and Woody here today. We want to stress how important the buddy system is. Wikipedia describes the buddy system as  a procedure in which two people, the "buddies", operate together as a single unit so that they are able to monitor and help each other.

Woody and Iare best friends and take care of each other. Where one of us is, the other is not far behind.  We like it like that.

Our Mom's buddy Marg went missing this week cuz of a internet and phone problem. Everyone was worried about her but she was OK and did let someone know. Lots of our blogging buddies live alone and don't have family nearby. Mom thinks we need to set up a buddy system where each one of us pairs up with someone else that blogs.  It can be two bloggers who live close by, a new blogger and a seasoned one or just two bloggers who like to chat with each other.

We can do it officially if you want (Mom volunteers) or just find a fellow blogger you like and want to pair up with. Even if you have family, they may not know anything about your blog or your blog buddies and won't know how to reach all of us if something happened to you. Even if you don't live nearby, you can still help by knowing about their pets, emergency contacts and vet info, in case something happened.

Some ideas on how to do this -
  • Find a buddy
  • Decide how often you want to check in with each other especially if you don't post every day on your blog.
  • Exchange emails, phone numbers etc.
  • Exchange phone numbers and emails of an emergency contact.
  • Swap names of your pets, photos,  ages and special needs and vet contact info.

What do you all think about this idea and how would you like to see it set up?  Leave a comment or email Mom.  Thanks for being our blog buddies!

Mom went ahead and set up a blog just for people trying to find others in their area.  Go to Pet Blogging Buddies.

I think that is a wonderful idea!

A some point in the past the Cat Blogosphere talked about having a contact person for each blogger so that if there were disasters in a certain area (ie hurricanes) that there would be someone outside the area who would know how to get a hole of the person--also they would have pertinent pet information in case someone outside needed to contact authorities about the pets. I am not sure whatever happened to that idea.

I think this is a most AMAZING idea!!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! Pure genius!

I am not sure how it should be set up so I am interested to read the suggestions that others might have.

Thank you for thinking of this!

That sounds like a good idea! When I got busy recently and was not able to update blogs, my blog friends emailed me to inquire about our condition which was such a warm gesture that is very much appreciated.

I got text messages and phone calls mostly asking how my dog Sweepy is doing. He's back on his new blog!

Really, I think the CWB People on Facebook is probably the simplest way to keep up with everyone, and it is far easier and more dynamic way to interact.

It's a great idea!! I can't think of how to set up such a system though but can totally see the benefits! Yay for mum!! Take care

I'm in, Cheri. However folks want to set it up is fine.

I actually carry all my contact info with me, including detailed info about the cats, vet info, microchip #s, food, supplements, etc. It would be easy enough to share all this with an on-line "buddy."

Great idea, I think. I *don't* have family geographically close and being an only child with aging parents, am very, very conscious of being totally alone when they pass, assuming I don't die before them.

I'm very interested in this - I'm an only child and both my parents are dead. My friends keep an eye out for me but if they are on holiday they wouldn't be aware I was sick or whatever.

We think it is a great idea. I am very lucky in that people notice when I am not on the internet and two people know how to get in touch with me and those are Brian's Dad and you Cheri. I think people have to set things up in their own way. It needs to be someone you generally contact every day so they will know you are missing in action. A lot of people don't do Facebook so that probably isn't always a good contact place.Anyway, a great idea.

This is a great idea, although we don't have a clue how to set it up. Maybe we could have a Master List with all our blogging friends on it somewhere (maybe CWB)

That sounds a great idea - Mum has no close living relatives that would bother. She is very interested in learning more about it.

It's a great idea, but a massive undertaking for anyone setting this up. I already have a buddy blogger, but could also take on another one. It's especially important if you live alone.

Great idea Cheri, count us in!

I agree--a wonderful idea!

It's all been said! Brilliant idea. Now we just need follow through. I suggest you save yourself and contact the Cat Blogosphere regarding their intent to set up contacts in case of natural disaster etc. That system would fit nicely with what you are suggesting it seems. I don't anything about the Face Book thing someone mentioned, but will take a look today.

This is an excellent idea. I've been thinking of something similar because I am worried about what would happen to the Furkids if something happened to me. I think the CB would find homes for everybuddy, but someone would have to notify them.

Cheri
I think it's a terrific idea.
No one wants to think anything bad could happen, but it could, to any of us. I am sure that when someone all of a suddens disappears, we all worry and wonder. I hope that there can be a way to do this that would work for everyone.

Thinking more on this...Wondering if it would be preferable to pair up with someone from your own country, in case a phone call is needed. I only suggest this because I use a long distance calling card, not a long distance service provider (too many "extra" charges) and so would need to get an out-of-Canada one if I were paired up from someone from the U.S., for instance.

Just food for thought.

Fuzzy Tales said...

Oh, and other reason for pairing up within-country would be time zone differences in case of emergency. For example, someone in the UK trying to reach someone in North America.

That's an interesting idea. We live near very nice neighbours so you needn't worry about us. But if we ever move....

Love the yin and yang cats!

I think that is the best idea ever. I have a buddy who blogs and we keep in touch BUT I am willing and happy to have another.
I live alone too and while my sons and I email frequently, if anything happened to me they'd be the last to know as they don't call every few days to keep tabs on me. They have no reason to at this time so if I keeled over..my blog buddy would know.

If anyone wants to have me as their buddy, let me know with a comment on Katie's or Admiral's blog and I will be happy to do so.

We can just all do this ourselves without a central list.

Cheri, thank you so much for that great idea.

I think it's a great idea. I live alone, but I have a close friend and we are in contact every day, but she doesn't know anything about blogging.
