Chica's Story

My name is Chica and I am a cat with catitude! I am a beautiful black tortoiseshell cat. I am Mom's first cat - she found me at a strip mall in Florida pawing at the glass in front of a store. Lots of beans were trying to pick me up but I would not have anything to do with them. Then I saw Mom and went right to her! I knew she was my best pal.

She took me home and looked real hard for my "owner" but I knew she was my real true bean friend. I was about 6 months old then. I was funny tho - I didn't like to be petted but liked to be in the same room as her and loved to play.

Mom had never had cats before (cuz Grandma was allergic) so she didn't know how to play with me except like a dog. We played fetch and catch with a bitty jingle ball, hockey with pennies on the floor and hide and seek. That was my favorite game.

Mom would go hide when I wasn't looking and I would go find her after she called me. I would look and look until I found her. She would jump out at me and I would run and then hide for her to find me. My favorite place was in the bathtub. I would lay down on the bottom and peek over the edge to see if she was coming, with only my ears and eyes showing. She thought that was funny! Pop thought we were crazy and I was going to be a dog instead of a cat. No way Jose!

Me helping Mom make the bed - I love to be anywhere Mom is!

I love to play still even at my age 18! Three years ago I got real sick and was throwing up and peeing a lot plus drinking lots of water. After tests at the vet, Mom found out I had chronic renal failure and was very upset. Mom gave me the homeopathic remedy Nux Vomica to stop the vomiting and our vet Maggie gave me a special supplement called Standard Process Renal Support, plus Chinese herbs and I am feeling much better. I take another homeopathic remedy mix plus a detox herb mix and don't drink and pee so much now.

I am the boss cat and all the other cats know it. If I don't like what is going on in the house I grumble and mutter to myself for a while and everyone gets outa my way except Mom. I know that when I want attention I just have to do something naughty and I will get lots of attention! Sometimes I will go stand on a dresser and paw at the pictures on the wall until someone comes to get me! I have them trained don't I?

Thanks for visiting and listening to my story. I plan on being around for a long while yet - terrorizing all and being with my Mom!

URGENT --Nutro Cat Foods Recall

Some Nutro pet foods have been voluntarily recalled due to contamination. The brands recalled are Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care and Nutro Max - both dry foods for cats. None of the dry or canned dog food are affected nor the canned cat food. This Press release was issued by Nutro:

Today, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with “Best If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

Two mineral premixes were affected. One premix contained excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium. The second premix under-supplemented potassium. Both zinc and potassium are essential nutrients for cats and are added as nutritional supplements to NUTRO® dry cat food.

This issue was identified during an audit of our documentation from the supplier. An extensive review confirmed that only these two premixes were affected. This recall does not affect any NUTRO® dog food products, wet dog or cat food, or dog and cat treats.

Go to the following web sites to check out which ones were recalled and why.

Mancat Monday - a Dilemma

Mom has a big dilemma in our shelter - Albert the white deaf cat is picking on poor Woody, a sweet tabby boy. Woody is very submissive and hides or runs from Al. Al does not know how to socialize with us other cats - he was probably taken from his mom and siblings too soon. We don't know anything about his early weeks. He seems to pick out the most timid ones and stalks them like prey!!! Things have heated up a bit between him and Woody.

Anyway Woody is hiding under or behind a chair all the time. Mom makes sure he gets love and food but what kind of life is this? He does love his brothers Norm and Sam and likes to be with them and Snowball. We can bring him inside the house but the cats in there don't know Woody and he may hide under something in the house too -and Mom won't be able to find him!!!! What to do???

On the other hand, Woody may like being in the house - he has never been in one before and may make friends with the other kitties and have a fun time. We have to ponder this - any suggestions or ideas are welcome.

Tabby Tuesday - Here's Joey!

Joey on the well house, looking in the window!

It's time to meet Joey...Hi everybody! I am the only mancat inside the house and I like it like that! I get to snuggle with all the ladycats all the time.

I was born a feral cat outside in the fall of 1999 with my sister Minnie, Leroy and Nick. Leroy disappeared when he was about six months old and we never found out what happened to him. He was a neat brother and I loved him lots. Nick came inside for a short while cuz he was sick and Mom took care of him until he went to the Bridge. I miss him too.

We all lived under an old trailer in the neighbor's yard. It was all we had to keep us warm during the long winter. Mom first noticed us coming out from under the trailer when we were about 6-8 weeks old on warmer sunny days and playing with each other. She did not know who our mom was - she never saw any ladycats with us.

Mom had built a neat shelter in her yard and the other cats were going over there to eat and play and be warm. When we got big enough we went there too and liked it. She gave us all yummy food, water and lots of toys. We liked the plastic eggs to bat around the yard.

Minnie sitting on Joey's cage on the porch.

She had been putting a big cage out and catching us one by one to get neutered. We were afraid of the cage at first - all my buddies would disappear for a day or so and then they would be back and be OK! So we did not mind the cage anymore. I did not want to go inside so when I was old enough I became a man without being neutered. That was not good though. Big Guy, the head cat of our group, told me I had to find another place to live since he was the main mancat. I hated to leave but that is what we have to do in the wild.

I moved down the street but Mom was so upset. She worried about me all the time. She finally caught me in the cage and I got neutered but it was too late - Big Guy still would not let me back in the group. I came by everyday for food and liked to sit on the well house looking in the kitchen window when Mom and Pop were doing dishes or cooking. They talked to me and told me they loved me.

Brother and sister playing inside.

A year or so went by and I began having fights with other cats - I am a lover boy so I think someone was picking on me. I came home with a big swollen paw and hid in the shelter. Mom closed the shelter door and when Pop came home they tricked me into coming out in the cage again. They took me to a vet and she fixed up my paw for me. They let me back outside but wouldn't you know I got into another scrap and got another abscess. Each time Mom fixed me up with homeopathic remedies - she put them in my food and my wound opened and drained without her having to go to the vet again with me.

Finally, it was Thanksgiving and again I had another swollen paw! That was it!!! Mom propped the porch door open and I just walked inside. She closed it and I got scared and hid behind the extra refrigerator out there. They spent all morning trying to catch me on the porch even though she was trying to cook the turkey! Pop caught me and I got put in a big kennel cage with food, water and a litter box. Mom decided I was going to be an inside cat now with my sister Minnie. I graduated from the cage to my own room and then to being allowed in the house with everyone else. Minnie helped me learn how to be inside and live with the other cats. I love my sister!

Well that was my story. I am ten now and love my Mom and Pop. I have lots of brothers and sisters and get along with everyone. I am real mellow and probably would not have lived this long outside - it is really tough out there. I am lucky - one lucky cat huh?

Photo Hunt - In Memory

Nicky 2000-2006

This is Nicky - Minnie and Joey's litter mate who lived outside with the feral group until he began to lose weight and Mom took him to the vet. He had intestinal cancer and we cared for him inside for the last months of his life. Nick was a shy handsome boy - he loved life inside and we all wish we could have brought him in sooner. He is missed by us all.

Yoko goes to the VET!

Sixteen year old Yoko who has a touch of Hyperthyroid (not full blown but running high) is going to the VET today. She has been dehydrated and not herself the past week. We need to find out what is going on. Purrs and Prayers for her please!

UPDATE!
Thanks for your purrs and prayers. Yoko had a long day yesterday and is resting today. The VET took blood - not easy with her. They had to use a face mask or hood to cover her head and then she was calmer. They gave her fluids, a vitamin B12 shot and an antibiotic shot cuz her gums were sore from teeth issues. We will have to deal with that on another visit. Poor Yoko peed at the vet's cuz she was scared - they cleaned her all up. We had to drive in a horrible rain storm and got soaked getting out of the car! What a day! We will find out the blood work results by Friday or Monday. Will keep you posted.

Happy May Day!

I am Sweetpea - you met me in the post below. I like to sit in the window and watch the goats in the pasture across the road. Pretty soon there will be babies! They are fun to watch. Lots of things are coming to life outside - the bees and butterflies too. Happy May Day!
