Formerly Feral Friday with Ivy

UPDATE Sept 4 - Mom forgot my Gotcha Day!!!  Oh well at least she posted this last week.  Shame on you Mom!  (Mom here - thanks for remembering her special day even tho I forgot.  I usually check the CB calendar each month but didn't get to it for Sept.  Happy Gotcha Day my sweet girl.)

Sorry for no posts until this one this week.  Mom's been working more and not getting things done online!  Today the post is about me - Ivy.  As a formerly feral kitty, I lived outside with the colony for seven years before Mom took me inside. I was pretty wild so she thought it would be best for me to let me live outside.  That was until out head cat Big Guy passed away.  They all the other male cats tried to take over the remains of the colony and the yard.

My buddy Nick was not well so Mom brought him inside before me.  I got to stay out for that last summer and it was fun but scary since I was alone out there.  All that is in the past now that I have been inside for nine years now - holy moly.  How did I get to 16 and have FIV?  Good care I guess.

Some tidbits about me now...

I have no teeth anymore.  Most fell out when I lived outdoors.  When Mom first saw me I had too many teeth and very large ones.  Thank Cod we have no pics of me then.  Mom said my teeth all stuck out of my mouth and I looked real scary.  She thinks it was from inbreeding whatever that is.  Our colony all had funny teeth - missing ones, really large ones, too many, etc.

I like to hang my head off the furniture like Snoopy did on his dog house.  Mom worries 'cuz it looks like I will slide right off but I usually don't.  I think it feels comfy to have my head lower than my body.  Anyone else out there that naps like this?

Me and Angel Joey in front of our heater.  I miss Joey.
I love to be warm!  Laying in the sun feels so good.  In the winter I love to sit right and I mean right in front of the heater when it is on. Mom is worried I will burst into flames 'cuz I get so hot.  So you can see I have lots of personality and love my new indoor digs even tho I lived outside for years.  Us ferals can always be tamed but it can take months for some.  Me ,I am easy!

Our dear friend Sparkle went over the Bridge recently and her family is having a memorial commnetathon for her.  Please stop by!

Formerly Feral Friday

This is not about us but a great story about a rescued feral cat!   Back in April, Brian from Brian's Home blog posted about a lovely black cat who had nearly been euthanized not once but twice in a South Carolina shelter.   If you don't recall this post - go here to read about him.

Well long story short, Mom's friend Donna in North Carolina adopted him and it has taken all these long months but he is now letting her pet him and love him up.

He had his own room for the longest time but her other cats could come in if she was there too. Donna made him some hidy places so he would feel safe but that she could reach under and pet him.  At first he only would let her pet him thru the blanket but eventually she could put her hand under the blanket and pet him directly.  Donna knows it takes lots of time, effort, patience and love to win over some cats.

Panther had been adopted out but was living outside again on his own with a group of feral cats when he was found.  He had a microchip and the lady who had originally rescued him was called.  She no longer worked with feral groups but tried hard to find the best home for him. One thing led to another and Brian's peep was involved.

Panther looking out at Spunky!

We are just sooo happy to know that Panther is loved, appreciated and has a forever home indoor only with his Mom Donna and other kitty brothers and sisters.Give a shout out to Brian and all the other bloggers who work tirelessly to help find homes for abandoned dogs and cats!

Formerly Feral Friday

It's me, Ivy, back again.  Thanks for all the great comments on my tell all post this week.  This pic above is one of my favorites - when computers had big box like shapes I would sit on the back and peek at Mom over the top!  I was living in her office when she first took me inside.  Since she thought I was soo wild and would not like being indoors, I was the last one of our first feral colony to be brought in.  Boy did I prove her wrong!

So many of you asked to see my sock catching video that Mom went ahead and downloaded it.  She is not the greatest at doing videos but at least you get the drift!  Mercifully, it is short and sweet. I guess I don't have the attention span I used to have  either that or I ran our of energy. Maybe we can try again with the socks! Have a great weekend!!!

Formerly Feral and Forever Friday

Hey everybody - Ivy here today to focus on formerly feral and forever homes.  Mom thinks I am about 12 years old.  Even tho I am a mushball lap cat, I have only been indoors for 5 of those years.  Ferals can be tamed and I am proof! I wouldn't let nobody near me when I lived outdoors! Boy have I changed with lots of love.

Did you know us cats are all descended from tabbies?  Experts think that black cats were the first color variety to arise from the ancestral tabby genes.  Since we are all really tabbies, sometimes under our apparent color, the tabby markings show up as ghost markings in kittens ands some adult black cats.

Not all black is the same  - some black cats with age and sun turn to a rust color like me!  And black is not always called black.  Oriental cats are called ebony or in color points, seal.  OK - enough info - let me get back to my nap in the sun and I will turn you over to Tux!

Last week we mentioned that one of our local shelters was featuring black cats for the month of February as part of their Black Tie Affair. Black cats get a bad rep and they don't deserve it! Meet Tux here from Animal Compassion Network in Asheville, NC.

According to the Black Tie Affair promotion Tux qualifies for a collarship where a local business assists with the adoption fee.  Tux is a black and white gentleman from a family of 7 cats. He is about 3 years old. His person lost her home, so Tux is out scouting for a new one. He has been around cats and dogs, and is quite friendly. Young enough to have some play, but old enough to not be a silly kitten, Tux will make a great family pet, and qualifies for the Black Cat Blitz adoption gift!  Call 828 274-3647 or visit Animal Compassion Network online.

(Mom got all the cat info from a book called Cat Biz by Amanda O'Neill)

Formerly Feral and Forever Friday

Formerly Feral Sweetpea here with the post for today. Mom got a new DSLR camera for Christmas and can finally take photos of all us black cats indoors without just getting a blob with eyes!  Yay for Mom!

With Valentine's Day coming up, one of our local shelters has declared Feb 1-28 to be Black Tie Affair to help get their black cats adopted. Black cats are always the last to leave a shelter. They want to get the word out that according to animal behaviorist Temple Grandin who wrote the book Animals Make Us Human that black cats tend to have calmer and friendlier dispositions than other cats and are more social.

Today we are featuring Tuxedo cats or Billicats.  Even tho I am not quite one cuz I only have a white spot on my chest I am the spokescat for this week.

Way back months ago, we did a post about Avon from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue and looked today to find out she is still there and still looking for her forever home. We need to do something about this. This is Avon and we will let her tell her story.

I was rescued from an abusive home just days before I gave birth to 6 kittens. I arrived at my foster home with my six 3-day-old kittens and I then took on 2 more kittens who had been abandoned. I was a fantastic mother to these eight kittens. I am just over a year old. I am a VERY sweet gal. I love to cuddle. I talk to get your attention - I just love to be the center of attention now that my babies are on their own. Please call my foster mom so you can meet such a precious lady; her number is (828) 778-3011. Or you can contact Brother Wolf Rescue in Asheville, NC

Formerly Feral Friday --Tabitha's Tale

I am a very pretty (if I may say so myself) tabby cat who lives with all my brothers and two sisters - Smidge and Georgie.

My mom Lily had me outdoors in her second litter during the spring of 2005. My bean Mom had tried to catch Lily before she got pregnant again with another litter but it didn't happen. She caught all the cats in the litter before me and brought them inside before we were all born. She was afraid the first litter would disperse throughout the neighborhood and she wouldn't be able to catch them to spay and neuter them.

Me with Only and Two Spot - see the spots? That's how they got their names only the spots faded!

We (Only, Two Spot, Smidge and me) were born under the house in the crawlspace. I was very feisty. Mom bean picked me up when we came up to eat on the deck and I just hissed and spit at her even tho I was just a tiny ball of fur at 6-8 weeks old! She wasn't sure we were all done nursing and didn't want Lily to go into heat again so she left us outside with her for a little longer hoping to catch us all together.

We spent the next few months lounging on the back deck, playing with toys Mom bean left out and living a very nice life. Mom bean was going to be moving to another town and wanted to take us all with her. Mom bean had TNR'd the other feral cats and let them live out their lives in the yard but this time was different. She asked everybody but none of the neighbors would take on the responsibility of feeding and caring for us if she left us behind to live outdoors. She couldn't do that.

We had gotten very used to her by now but still wouldn't let her pet us. She would prop open the porch door and stand inside and we would come in to explore. Only and Two Spot either were dumber or smarter than us (not sure which) but she caught them first by closing the door while they were busy exploring and they were caught on the porch. We got all upset at first but then went back to life as usual.

One day Mom bean put Only in a carrier in the porch and opened the door for us to see. Even Lily went inside to see what was going on. Smidge and I followed Mom Lily and Mom bean closed the porch door! We were inside but not very happy. It took Pop and Mom beans hours to catch us all and put us safely in one small room so we could get used to them and being inside.

Pop bean had a friend who said he would adopt me. He had another little all black kitty and wanted me for a friend for his kitty. Pop bean spent a lot of time with me handling me and petting me - getting me ready for moving in with Robert but that never happened. I am not sure why but in a way I am glad to still be with my family.

We all got moved to the new place and all my litter mates and Lily live with me in a cool shelter the beans made for us. Their house is smaller here than the old one so they converted the workshop and carport into a indoor playroom and screen porch for us to live in. We have all sorts of shelves and chairs to sit on and they spend lots of time out here with us. Pop bean uses the workshop - we gave him a small corner of it to putter around in.

Our neat new porch - that's me with my brothers watching birdies.

I like to be petted, play with my brothers, and eat. I am very loving thanks to all the time Pop bean spent with me. Boxes and a cool red cube are my favorite spots. We watch the goats and birds outside from our enclosed porch and in warm weather get to feel the nice breezes blow through the screen porch. It sure is a better life than we would have had living outside at the old house with no one to care for us.

Me today with Only and Two Spot.

Introducing Ivy on Formerly Feral Friday

Ivy is about eleven and has spent most of her adventurous life outside with the feral gang. She was the head female cat of the ones in my backyard and the first one I saw when we moved into the old farmhouse in the mountains in spring of 1999.

She was a skinny mother with a litter of babies stashed away in the old shed in my neighbor's yard. My heart broke to see her so painfully thin and trying to find food for herself to nurse her little ones. I really did not want to get involved with this group who I thought belonged to the people who lived behind us but she tugged at my heartstrings and I relented. I began putting dry food out on the back deck for her and soon realized that there were many more other hungry kitties.

I never saw her kittens so I don't know how many survived. She thrived on the food and with winter coming I wanted to provide a shelter. (Turns out another neighbor was putting dry food out too but no one was spaying/neutering or giving medical attention to these poor kitties.) Not wanting to bother my husband with another construction project I bought several bales of straw and made an igloo of sorts that I lined with straw and covered with plastic. I faced the opening to the south to keep the cold north winds out.

Big Guy at the straw shelter.

We lost a few of the group come spring - wild animals, disease or they just wandered off. I felt that I had to do something to stop the litters so I talked to the veterinarian in the neighborhood and she agreed to work with me on a discount basis since she was doing this for the local humane shelter. I learned all I could about TNR (trap, neuter and release)and got started. I caught Ivy first in a wire kennel cage with string tied to the door - I could get closer to them by now and baited the cage with food. She went in and I pulled the door shut. She was wild -banging and slamming herself at the sides and howling so much all the others ran off.

The spaying went well and I released her the next morning. She had rubbed her fur off in spots on her head trying to push her way out through the cage bars. She was one tough and persistent little girl.

Her life went along smoothly as I caught and neutered the rest of the gang over a year or so. She loved to sit in the sun on the deck and look inside to watch our house activities. On hot days Ivy would sleep in the cool dirt under the hostas in the flower beds. She was a great hunter and caught voles, birds, mice, whatever she could find to bring to her feral main mancat Big Guy, a large tom - white with black markings. He was her constant companion. The group was obviously inbred with noticeable deformities like too many teeth, hearing loss, mishaped ears. Ivy had huge fangs and too many teeth - so much so her mouth would not close completely, giving her a constant grimace.

Years passed and all but three of her feral group were either inside or had passed on. One winter outside was a tough one and she got a terrible cold. I usually used homeopathic medicines or antibiotics in the food but she was so sick she would not eat. I was afraid were were going to lose her. I tried unsuccessfully to catch her many times. All I could do was to send healing energy to her in the form of Reiki and hope that it worked. Whenever I could, I would stand in the back window facing the shelter (which had become quite cozy over the years with insulation, windows etc.) and send the Reiki to her for as long as I could. It worked and she soon started to eat again, getting the medication she so needed. Finally she recovered with spring and warmer weather coming.

The newer cozy shelter and Big Guy outside.

I still could not pet her even though I could pet the others at feeding time. She was the most wild and distant feral yet my first so I loved her more. It was a tough life out here and I hoped she would make it.

In 2004 we had three hurricanes a week apart dumping over 20 inches of rain each time. The river in our neighborhood flooded and I was worried sick for the cats. The winds were strong but not as dangerous as the water. With the second hurricane which arrived at night, I kept shining a light out from the back window to see if I could tell if the cat shelter was still safe from the river. Come morning I could see they had spent the night on the upper level under the roof but the water had not reached them. They survived all three storms OK!

Big Guy died that fall - I found him lying in the shelter and not able to get up. I carried him inside, making a soft bed for him in the bathroom and sat next to him for hours. I had noticed in the weeks proceeding this that he seemed tired and was not as active. He passed away in my arms and Ivy lost her dear companion.

With Big Guy gone, another tomcat was trying to take over. Poor Nick was so afraid he hid, only coming out for food. I caught him one night in a Haveaheart trap and brought him inside. Ivy was so hard to catch and I am sure lonely alone. She was not using the shelter but staying on our deck and under the house. I kept telling her I wanted to bring her inside with Nick and one day she finally walked into the cage and let me catch her. I know how much she loved being outside and running free but I feared for her safety.

She has been inside now for four years and is the biggest mushball I could want! That totally surprised me but she loves to sit on my lap and get cuddled. She adjusted quite well to being with us and doesn't even seem to want to go out. She has FIV and thyroid issues but other than that seems to be happy and healthy. She loves the scratch post, her Busy Kitty toy and eating! Like I said she is one tough little girl and we love her so much.

Ivy and Two Spot enjoying life inside.

Darby on Formerly Feral Friday

My favorite toy is a ribbon. I love playing with ribbons but Mom only gives them to me when she is around to supervise.

This is fun. I love ribbons..I love ribbons. I feel like someone's watching me. Who is there? Anybody?

I see glowing eyes...yikes! A boogey cat!!!! Oh it's only Mamacita trying to get my ribbon away!

She's a lot bigger than me. I think I will pretend to nap and maybe she will go away and leave my ribbon alone! I don't wanna mess with her!

New Friends on Formerly Feral Friday

I am Rosa and wanted to do this post for Formerly Feral Friday since I am one of the newer ferals to live with us cats.

Mom is real big on caring for and helping feral cats since we came into her life 10 years ago. She got us all TNR'd and even tamed us! It has been a real learning experience for her.

She found a couple of blogs about helping cats and thought since today is Formerly Feral Friday we should let everyone know about these neat folks so you can visit them too.

http://animalsheltervolunteer.blogspot.com/ is about a couple who volunteer at a Connecticut no kill shelter called PAWS that rescues cats.

The other blog is http://homelesscatcare.blogspot.com/ based in Arizona and they have been caring for a group of feral cats for three years.

Both groups are listed on our blogroll in the sidebar. These folks could use your verbal and financial support so do visit them and show them you appreciate wheat they are doing for all us cats!

Formerly Feral Friday with Norm

Raining again -- so we are napping and ruling our land from the safety of our screen porch. Someone's gotta keep track of all the birds, squirrels and chipmunks!
