Formerly Feral and Forever Friday

Hey everybody - Ivy here today to focus on formerly feral and forever homes.  Mom thinks I am about 12 years old.  Even tho I am a mushball lap cat, I have only been indoors for 5 of those years.  Ferals can be tamed and I am proof! I wouldn't let nobody near me when I lived outdoors! Boy have I changed with lots of love.

Did you know us cats are all descended from tabbies?  Experts think that black cats were the first color variety to arise from the ancestral tabby genes.  Since we are all really tabbies, sometimes under our apparent color, the tabby markings show up as ghost markings in kittens ands some adult black cats.

Not all black is the same  - some black cats with age and sun turn to a rust color like me!  And black is not always called black.  Oriental cats are called ebony or in color points, seal.  OK - enough info - let me get back to my nap in the sun and I will turn you over to Tux!

Last week we mentioned that one of our local shelters was featuring black cats for the month of February as part of their Black Tie Affair. Black cats get a bad rep and they don't deserve it! Meet Tux here from Animal Compassion Network in Asheville, NC.

According to the Black Tie Affair promotion Tux qualifies for a collarship where a local business assists with the adoption fee.  Tux is a black and white gentleman from a family of 7 cats. He is about 3 years old. His person lost her home, so Tux is out scouting for a new one. He has been around cats and dogs, and is quite friendly. Young enough to have some play, but old enough to not be a silly kitten, Tux will make a great family pet, and qualifies for the Black Cat Blitz adoption gift!  Call 828 274-3647 or visit Animal Compassion Network online.

(Mom got all the cat info from a book called Cat Biz by Amanda O'Neill)

Formerly Feral and Forever Friday

Formerly Feral Sweetpea here with the post for today. Mom got a new DSLR camera for Christmas and can finally take photos of all us black cats indoors without just getting a blob with eyes!  Yay for Mom!

With Valentine's Day coming up, one of our local shelters has declared Feb 1-28 to be Black Tie Affair to help get their black cats adopted. Black cats are always the last to leave a shelter. They want to get the word out that according to animal behaviorist Temple Grandin who wrote the book Animals Make Us Human that black cats tend to have calmer and friendlier dispositions than other cats and are more social.

Today we are featuring Tuxedo cats or Billicats.  Even tho I am not quite one cuz I only have a white spot on my chest I am the spokescat for this week.

Way back months ago, we did a post about Avon from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue and looked today to find out she is still there and still looking for her forever home. We need to do something about this. This is Avon and we will let her tell her story.

I was rescued from an abusive home just days before I gave birth to 6 kittens. I arrived at my foster home with my six 3-day-old kittens and I then took on 2 more kittens who had been abandoned. I was a fantastic mother to these eight kittens. I am just over a year old. I am a VERY sweet gal. I love to cuddle. I talk to get your attention - I just love to be the center of attention now that my babies are on their own. Please call my foster mom so you can meet such a precious lady; her number is (828) 778-3011. Or you can contact Brother Wolf Rescue in Asheville, NC

Forever Friday with Blanca

Meet Blanca. She was a feral kitten rescued by Debra Taylor in Arizona and placed in a loving home when she was 8 weeks old. Sometimes our forever homes are not forever for reasons beyond our control and Blanca's mom can no longer keep her.  She has to move and her new roommate has allergies so Blanca can't go with her. Her mom asked Deb to help her find a new home.

Blanca is a lovely long haired cat, white with apricot flame point markings. She is indoor only, spayed and about 2 years old. Anyone would love to have such beauty. Since she lives in Arizona she would need transportation to her new home. Please help find her a forever home for forever this time. If you know anyone who might be interested in adopting Blanca, have them contact Deb at 928 772-6826. To read more about Blanca, please stop by Deb's blog Homeless Cat Care.

Forever Friday with Moosie

We thought we would run this post to help dear Moosie find a home.  She is 12 and has lost both her mom bean and cat brother recently and needs a forever home.  She is being fostered and prefers to be the only cat or maybe with one other quiet docile cat in the home.  Her foster mom says she is doing well in her private suite and getting a little bored - she wants to have a house to run around in and lots of interaction with her beans.  Moosie lives in the Washington DC area and transportation can be arranged if you live elsewhere and want to adopt her.  She does have a few health issues but nothing major and does well with her meds.  Please pass this on and help find her a home where she can live out the rest of her life being loved and cherished..  For more info on her and how to adopt her please go to Brian's Home blog.

Thank you all for stopping by for Snowball's Gotcha Day party - Mom is still returning visits and will be doing so all weekend.  We treasure each and every one of you and are very grateful for your friendship!  Happy weekend.

Forever Friday with Sparkles, Moonie, Alice and Possum

Fellow blogger (daily dose of dogs (aka cats with your coffee) and animal lover, Chrystal and her family run a privately funded rescue operation in the Midwest and have several wonderful animals up for adoption - she needs to find them homes so she can take more homeless animals into her shelter.  Please open your hearts to these very deserving and loving cats (and dogs) and give them a home or help pass the word on to find them homes.  You can contact Chrystal and read more about them at her blog here

Lover boy Moonie is a year old. He gives kisses and willl do anything to get your attention -  drop onto his side in front of you, roll around at your feet, climb into your lap.  This guy craves attention. If you want a little buddy and great companion, this is the cat for you.

Alice is an absolutely beautiful cat.  She is almost entirely white, with a wildly colorful tail.  Some think she has the markings of a Turkish Van.  She is cautious with people and other cats, at first.  She needs a home with  patient “parents” who will let her adjust at her own pace.  Once she gets to know you, she slips over for attention and starts purring.

If you like white cats, you will love Possum (neutered male) who has golden eyes.  Now 6 months old, he looked like a little possum with his tiny pink nose when they took him in.  Possum is an extremely handsome little guy.  He loves people, seeks out attention and gets along great with all of the cats in the cathouse.  If there is a lap available, he will be the first one in it.

Beautiful little Sparkles was born in July 2010.  She came to live here with her brother Ash who has been adopted..  At first, she was afraid of people but she has opened up and adores being the center of attention..  Sparkles lives up to her name in her personality and is a play hog - never stops.   Not yet spayed.  (Spaying would be a requirement of adoption.)

Location is not an issue - if you would like to give one of these great cats a home, Chrystal will find a way to get the cat to you somehow.  She also has dogs available so be sure to visit her blog and follow along in her day to day animal rescues.

Forever Friday - Black Cat Friday

Mom went back to look at all the Forever Friday posts and saw that all the black cats she featured were still on the Petfinders list except Bella. And she also noticed that all her local shelters had many many black cats still waiting for forever homes. We love house panthers so in this month of black cats and spells let's work our own magic to find homes for these deserving cats.

If you are a fan of the cartoon "Plugger", you will be a fan of this big senior cat! All black Clubber has 6 toes, thus the name. He would be the perfect companion for a quiet, calm household. For more info on how to adopt him visit Animal Compassion Network in Asheville, NC

This is Shadow, a 1 year old Maine Coon mix neutered male from the Avery County Humane Shelter in Newland, NC. For one reason or another Shadow keeps coming back. Never his fault! Shadow has found his home twice and the families have had to bring him back due to lack of money or moving to a new location. Please help us find his forever home.

Avon is a short hair tuxedo cat available for adoption at Brother Wolf Rescue in Asheville, NC. This is her story:   I was rescued from an abusive home just days before I gave birth to 6 kittens.

Keever is a silky black fellow with a sweet, soulful nature. Bonding with people is his trademark. He will follow you around and sit on your lap. In between playtimes, he loves to be brushed and petted. He is good with other cats. We've had this little sweetie for over a year, simply because of his color! Please call his foster mom at (828) 281-2885 to meet Keever.

So let's work some black cat magic this week and find homes for these lovely cats...think positive thoughts that a special someone will come into their lives.

When witches go riding
And black cats are seen
The moon laughs and whispers
Tis near Halloween!

Forever Friday

Mom is a little under the weather again with a sinus infection from her allergies. She wanted to do a recap on all the homeless cats and dogs we posted who got homes but maybe next week. These guys are from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue's Underdog page - they have been at the shelter for a long time because of their color, breed, special needs or something. Please pass this on and help find them homes.

Sally is a 3 year old chow mix looking for a human to show her kindness after living her whole life chained to the bumper of a car, going for days without food or water. She needs someone who will introduce her to all the world has to offer with patience. Once Sally trusts you, she will love you forever and snuggle and kiss you. She takes longer to warm up to men, than women, but with time can accept men. Sally is wonderful in her foster home. She taught herself to go to the bathroom only outside, by not wanting to dirty her kennel, when she was at the BWAR shelter. She has never had an accident in the house and is completely trustworthy when left alone. She will "gather" shoes and things from her human to keep with her when she sleeps, but has never destroyed anything. She does great with the cats in her foster home and will slowly be introduced to the dogs. She has spent time on leash at events with other dogs and done well. Sally would do best in a home without constant strangers visiting. She does learn to accept visitors over a period of time, but it does take multiple visits. Sally has been waiting almost a year now for her forever family to find her. She is an absolutely wonderful, loving girl who just needs that family to understand she had a rough start. If you're looking for a dog to love you with all she's got - Sally is the girl for you.

Both these great animals can be found at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, North Carolina.  Thanks for your help!

Drawing Winner and Forever Friday

Thanks to all our readers who stopped by for our 300th post celebration and Mamacita and Rosa's Gotcha Day. Using the Random Number Generator we chose a winner - the enchanting Miss Kitty! Congrats to her and her Daddy! They just won a copy of Homer's Odyssey by Gwen Cooper.

Last week we told you about a great organization that rescued and placed feral cats - Alley Cats and Angels in North Carolina. Well, we are featuring a few of their kitties as this week's Forever Friday kitties.

Named after the Disney TV show, Sunny with a Chance, poor little Sunny has suffered a head trauma and is at the vets being cared for. He is OK other than than wound.

Sunny and her siblings, three pretty tabby kittens, were born to a feral mom and were finally relinquished into their care. Sunny has a head trauma with some part of the skull visible. However, other than her head, she appears to be healthier than her siblings. Her siblings are terribly underweight for their age. They named these gorgeous kittens - Sunny, Stormy, Cloudy and Windy!

They were all taken to the vet and given the full spa treatment - cleaning, bath, clipping etc. They are now in a foster home waiting for Sunny to get released from the vet. Please stop by their blog to say hi and pass the word on so that these sweet little ones can have a great forever home. And do follow them like we do - they are such a caring group of folks and do wonderful things for homeless cats.

If you buy your flea products online please read an article Mom  posted on her other blog about counterfeit products. And do stop by to link up with us on Sat. Oct. 2 for Livestrong Day!  Mr Linky is set up to be shared so you can put it on your blog too!  Just grab the code and post it under your Livestrong post and publish.

Forever Friday with Jack and Chloe

Next week Pet Finders is hosting Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet. Sparkle, celebrity cat extraordinaire,  is challenging all of us pet bloggers to do something this week to help get the word out about how great senior, disabled, and special needs pets and breeds with bad reps can be, when given a chance in a loving forever home. We know from experience since we have chronically ill cats, senior cats and disabled cats living in our home.

With that in mind we will be featuring a less adoptable dog and cat each day next week starting this Forever Friday with Jack and Chloe of Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, NC.

Jack is an purebred 8-week old (you guessed it) Jack Russel Terrier. He was found underneath a car, injured and frightened. He's now safe in a loving foster home, but this poor little guy had been hit by a car when he was on his own, and will need to have his leg amputated. Jack will do just fine on three legs - check out tripawds.com to visit a whole site dedicated to three legged dogs! - and he'll live pain free and happy. Donations are accepted towards his surgery costs which are estimated to be around $600. Thanks! Please help find a forever home for him and if you can donate towards his medical needs - his Chip-in button is on this page.

Chloe and her canine friend Abby (a 5 year old Border Collie/Lab mix) were orphaned when their owner passed away. Chloe is a lovely dilute tortoiseshell girl, around 3-4 years old, and is a 'special needs' kitty because she has been blind since birth. But it hasn't slowed her down and she's such a sweet girl! She has no problem using her litterbox or making her way around a house with just a little time to explore and get her bearings. She loves petting and is chatty when her fostermom walks into the room. Chloe would probably be fine with a calm dog, and possibly a gentle cat. Email Chloe's fostermom Jackie at solemn78@hotmail.com if you'd like to meet this awesome girl and give her a second chance at a wonderful life.

Brother Wolf is our only no-kill shelter in town and had been having financial issues but are doing so much better now.  Please stop by their web site to see what other great pets can be found there and pass the word on!

Let's take Sparkle up on his challenge and find great homes for as many special needs pets as we can! Go to Pet Finders and grab a widget and paste in on your blog!

We Are Back and Forever Friday

We got a new hard drive put in our old computer and all the stuff on it was saved - altho it is in files. Mom has her work cut out for her to set it all up again!

We will do our usual Forever Friday and hopefully Mom can find her photos for next week! We missed you all and know that so many things happened while we were offline - some sad and some good. We will be back visiting even if our blog posts are slow at first!

Caroline is the Diva of the Set, the Queen of the Castle, the Princess of Everything--whatever you want! She high-fives, knows tricks, loves treats, and sashays with the best! And ps, Caroline says, NO DOGS or doggie smells, as they ruffle her pantaloons in an almighty way! pss, no dogs, did I say that???

Click on the shelter name above to find out more about Caroline or how you can adopt her. Please pass this on so we can help find her a forever home!

Fragrance Free and Forever Friday

This is Eureka, an older kitty available from the Animal Compassion Network. Eureka, Einstein, and Mocha are siblings who have lived together since 6 weeks of age. Life has been fine until recently when the economy tanked, and along with it went home. Eureka has lived with other cats and dogs, likes being held, and is very affectionate. She likes to knead your lap to show her love. She would be a great lap kitty alone or with other kitties.

This is sister Einstein, She is a bit of a loner, but dogs and cats are okay. If you don't want a clingy cat, but like a calm presence, she's your kitty!

Mocha is a looker--more Espresso than mocha latte, but just as yummy in kitty land! Mocha is really all cat--friendly, then quiet. She dictates the pace, and the pace can be love all the way. This senior would love to be adopted with siblings Einstein and Eureka, but a single home is good too. Cats and dogs have been in her life, and that is okay as well.

Please share their stories and help us find a forever home for these lovely older sisters - hopefully keeping them together!

Mom just found out that Aug 13 is Fragrance Free Friday and since we don't use any chemicals in our house (Mom has allergies) we thought we would share this info with all since chemicals can harm pets too.

SeaYu, makers of environmentally safe cleaning products has declared chemicals in fragrances unlucky on this Friday August 13! They are asking all of us to refrain on this day from using any chemical based fragrance whether it is cosmetics, air freshener or cleaning product unless they are environmentally safe.

According to their press release - Animals have faster metabolisms and smaller lungs than humans, so not only are they processing harmful chemicals used in the home more quickly, they are also breathing them in at a faster rate. Because animals are closer to the ground, they are more often in direct contact with these harmful substances making Fragrance Free Day of special importance for pet owners everywhere.

Fragrance Free Day gives concerned consumers a chance to help spread awareness of the dangers associated with fragrance/chemicals in personal care and household cleaning products. This awareness campaign comes at a time when, according a recent report by ABC News, “Congress and the cosmetics industry are both calling for tighter regulation of the chemicals used in cosmetics and other personal care products due to concerns over possible carcinogens and other toxic ingredients.”

For more details on Fragrance Free Friday click here. Let's make Friday the 13th a lucky one for us all!
P.S. in honor of Friday the 13th Minnie our black cat is featured on Black Cat Friday at Ollie's blog - go visit and say hi!

Forever Friday with Katie

Katie is two years old and a sweet, outgoing girl wanting to be part of any and everything going on in the house. Since arriving in foster care she has discovered that playing with cats other than her sister, Taffy, can be great fun.

Katie has proven quite tolerant of dogs even if they're a little annoying. Her gregarious nature would make her a good fit for any home, including those with younger children.

Katie arrived in rescue when her family was no longer able to keep her because of pet restrictions. Katie is adoptable through a great organization called Alley Cats and Angels in the Raleigh area of NC. What makes them unique is that they will rescue feral cats and find homes for them. Let's help them find a great forever home for Katie! Share this on Facebook or Twitter!

UPDATE
Beautiful black Bella from the Asheville Humane Society was adopted. Another one off to her forever home!

Forever Friday with Casper and girls

Since we have a lot of white cats we thought we would feature some white beauties this week from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. They are the no-kill shelter that was in financial need a few weeks back. Thanks to all who helped them out, they are doing better now and hoping to raise awareness of the importance of no-kill shelters.

This is Casper who was rescued from the local animal shelter. He is one and one half years old and a very handsome white mancat. He was pretty scruffy looking when he was brought into Brother Wolf's care, but he's feeling better every day. Email bwarcatteam@gmail.com if you'd like to meet him!

This is Rose who is a young playful white kitty who needs a forever home. There are two others her age and all white - Blanche and Dorothy. Please help hem find someone that will give them love and a caring home.

For more info on all these cats and more please visit Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. Pass the word on to others and make sure your Congress members know that you want your community to be no-kill. For more info on creating a no-kill community go to Maddie's Fund or No Kill Nation on Facebook.

Forever Friday with Tina and Peace

Today we are visiting an animal shelter in the High Country near Boone, NC. The Watauga Humane Society is a low kill shelter with both dogs and cats.

Someone saw a car slow down and toss Tina out the car window. Tina is very people friendly despite her experience. Tina is two and has been here at the Watauga Humane Shelter since December 2008. Here she is posing pretty in the cats room. Please help find her a forever home!

This beautiful sweet guy was adopted from the shelter as a kitten and just recently ended up in a shelter in Charleston, SC. His owner was contacted and did not want Peace back so one of the shelter employees went to Charleston and got him. Peace is an amazing cat and would fit into any family. He is 2 years old and long haired. Please help find him a forever home by re posting this everywhere!

More info on adopting these two great cats can be found online at the Watauga Humane Society.

UPDATE - Bella from last week's Forever Friday is still at the shelter. Franzia, featured a few weeks back, from Brother Wolf Rescue was adopted! The other cats Clubber and Big Boy are still available - just search for Forever Friday on this blog to see their posts.

URGENT - Our only no-kill shelter - Brother Wolf Rescue is having severe financial problems. They are determined not to close no matter what it takes but they need help. Please help in any way you can. Every town needs a no-kill shelter! (The local paper did an article on them and helped raise awareness of their situation - things look better but they still need help. Please read the letter on their home page from the Executive Director thanking all who have donated so far.)

Thanks for helping us help homeless pets!

Forever Friday - Bella and Creamsicle

Both of these cats are from the Asheville Humane Society in Asheville, NC and are available for adoption. (Click on the shelter name for more info) This shelter is not a no-kill shelter so we would like to put their names and pictures out to blog world in hopes of finding them a home

Creamsicle is a large male neutered boy who is about 3 years old. He is a lovely buff colored tabby cat.

Bella is an all black large female who is also about 3 years old. Given that black cats do not get adopted as readily as other colors we hope Bella finds a forever home soon.

We also want to let you all know that Beatrice - the cow cat from a few weeks back was adopted from the Asheville Humane Society! Isn't that great????

We may or may not have aided in that but let's do it again for these two - spread the word on Facebook, Twitter...anyplace to help them find a loving home.

Thanks for your help and have a great weekend ya'll!

UPDATE - Creamsicle was adopted! Yaaay!

Forever Friday and Happy 4th!

Even tho June is over, we are still doing our Forever Fridays to help shelter cats find their forever homes. This week our poster cat is Shadow, a 1 year old Maine Coon mix neutered male from the Avery County Humane Shelter in Newland, NC.

*For one reason or another Shadow keeps coming back. Never his fault! Shadow has found his home twice and the families have had to bring him back due to lack of money or moving to a new location. Please help us find his forever home.*
UPDATE - Beatrice the cow cat from an earlier post was adopted since we ran the post! YAAAAAY!
And on a lighter note.....

Ivy says we wish you all a very happy, safe and fun Fourth of July!

In honor of our National Bird the Bald Eagle we have some fun trivia about them......

Did You Know?
Benjamin Franklin, John Adams & Thomas Jefferson served on the committee that picked the eagle for the national seal (Franklin wanted the turkey.)

Bald eagles have few natural enemies & live only in North America.

Bald eagles get their white head & tail feathers about 4-5 years of age.

The only other kind of eagle in North America is the golden eagle.

Bald eagles mate for life, but if one dies, the survivor will accept a new mate.

It is a felony to shoot an eagle.

Happy 4th Ya'll!

Forever Friday - Beatrice

This lovely cow cat is Beatrice and she is at the Asheville Humane Society. Uunfortunately it is not a no kill shelter but all the more reason to help find homes for the loving cats and dogs that are confined here.

Beatrice is about 4 years old, a large girl and sadly has been declawed. She could really use a forever home so let's send her purrs, prayers and lots of vibes that the right person finds her.

For more info on adoptable pets please go to Asheville Humane Society.

Au and Target from Katz Tales gave us this fun award. It comes with three rules....

Rule #1 - Thank the person who gave it to you.
Big thanks to Au and Target.

Rule #2. - Share 9 things about yourself.
We will share 9 secrets of us cats......

1. Lots of folks wonder about our name Wildcat Woods. Well, Mom's friend Emily is an artist and wanted to know what we were going to call our new home which sits at the edge of 8 wooded acres. Emily called her abode Hobbit Hill and created a lovely sign that sits beside her long driveway. Since we are all feral and wild (not really) Mom decided on Wildcat Woods. Hopefully Emily will paint us a really cool sign with the name on it one day!

2. Joey, our mancat tabby in the house, gives love nips, especially to Mom. He once bit her nose when she was holding him in her arms. She has to be careful if he gets that look in his eye...a nip is coming.

3. Sweetpea falls alspeep in the weirdest place and then falls off! One time when we had company, she was asleep on the shelf by the door. We were telling our friends about how she falls off things and the next thing we hear is a thump and there she is on the floor. Most times she does land on her feet even asleep! Everybody laughed - she didn't like that.

4. Mamacita thinks her name is "Lookout" That's cuz she always runs in front of Mom when she is putting food down or getting ready to feed us and Mom has to keep saying "lookout" or she will step on Mamacita!

5. Al, our deaf cat, loves to use his paw to push small things off the table, shelf or counter and watch them fall to the ground. He doesn't hear the crash things make when they break. All the other cats run away from the noise. Mom stopped putting breakables out - Al doesn't mind - it's the falling he likes!

6. Georgie is really the most perfectly proportioned cat we have. Mom thinks she is the most beautiful. The shape of her head, eyes and everything is just right. Isn't she lovely?

7. Chica plays catch with the cage balls - when Mom throws one to her, she stands up on her hind legs and catches the ball with her two front paws. Even now at 19, she still plays.

8. At feeding time, Snowball and his three brothers - Norm, Sam and Woody - gather around the dry food bowl and eat. Pop uses this time to love them up and they get so excited. He is petting everyone and they are all rubbing up against each other and him all the while munching down on dry food. Feeding frenzy for sure! (We need to video this one time!)

9. Mom thought Smidge was a boy - even up till she was neutered. She is Only and Two Spot's litter mate and acted tough and bossy and rough like them. Even tho she has a sister Tabitha, Smidge played rough with the boys. Mom was sure surprised when they told her he was a she!

10. Sam is the only one of the cats that had his ear tipped when he was neutered (what they do to ferals in colonies so they know they got TNR'd). Mom had the vet do it cuz she couldn't tell him apart from Norm. Now we know who Sam is by his ear.

Rule #3 - give this award to 9 other bloggers.
We hope you enjoyed this tell all and would like to invite anyone else to take this award and join in. So many of you already have it.

Please keep June 24 open - our Chica is 19 this year and we are having a huge celebration for her that day plus a give-away too. Come on by!
