Thankful Thursday

Our Lily

Lily here today. What a week and it is still going.  We are very thankful that we as ferals have a forever home and we are able to help a handicapped kitten find new home.  We have a story to share.....

A few days ago while Mom was at work, she got a phone cal from a rescuer in South Carolina.  Someone had contacted her about a kitten, very young, who was not able to walk.  It seems she was found alone in the woods and her back legs did not work.

The kitten who can't walk

She was taken to a vet who did x-rays and saw that her pelvis was missing a piece so there was nothing to move her hip and legs.  She was healthy otherwise and scooted along the floor sliding her back legs.  She sounded like the infamous Dot of Tabby's Place (who recently got adopted).

That was the first place Mom thought of so she contacted John of It's All Good blog to pass this info on to Tabby's Place and then Mom contacted our local no-kill shelter Brother Wolf about taking the kitten.  Before Tabby's Place got back to us and they did, Brother Wolf posted a pic of the sweet kitten and her sad story on their Facebook page and within hours we had several adoption offers!!!!  Mom relayed the info and contacts to the woman who was fostering the kitten We will let you know how this turns out but it seems like this sweet little girl will have a forever home in spite of her handicap.

The rescuer in SC also told her about  Upstate Veterinary Specialists in Greenville that would do a free consult, to look at the x-rays and decide if there is anything they can do for the kitten.  If she has a piece of pelvis, perhaps they can construct the missing section or make some pin to connect it so she can walk a bit.  A bit of hope! Even if she can't, we are purring for a loving forever home for her.

We will keep you posted! Thank you to John for passing on the info to Tabby's Place.  Thank you to Tabby's Place for getting back to us so quickly. And  a HUGE thanks to Brother Wolf for acting so quickly to  post on FB - they rock!

So do get involved in rescuing, transport pets, volunteer at a shelter, foster pets and share posts on Facebook and Twitter  - all these things work to help find homeless pets forever homes!

Update on Kitten Cobbie (AKA Danica) and her buddy Angelica

Cobbie (now called Danica)

If you remember a few weeks back our Mom helped to find a foster home for a South Carolina kitten with FIV.  Well she went by to see how Cobbie was doing today. Cobbie's name has been changed to Danica and she is up for adoption along with another little FIV kitten named Anglica.  They are best buddies and we hope to find a forever home for them together.

Angelica - look at her paws!

Angelica and Danica were born around July of 2011. Angelica likes to lay around your neck and purr in your ear. Danica loves to play with people and with her buddy cat.

They both tested positive for FIV but know that FIV is not an automatic death sentence. Lots of kittens and cats live long and healthy lives. They just need to be inside ONLY and get regular vet check ups, good quality food and lots of love.

It would be great if they could be adopted together as they are very attached to each other and love to play and wrestle. An FIV cat should be the only cat in the home unless you have another FIV cat as it can be contagious but only to other cats.

Mom wants to reiterate that our Ivy has been living indoors with all of us for six years and she tested positive for FIV.  None of the other cats have had any problems health wise since Ivy came inside.  FIV is only transmitted to other cats via a serious bite.

If you would like to know more about these wonderful kittens, please leave a  comment or email our mom.  Feel free to repost, use the photos or tweet or post on Facebook.  We really want to get them a forever home while they are still young and cute!  If you can't adopt, then consider sponsoring one of them! It would help with their care and expenses!

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue's Adoption Center is located at 31 Glendale Avenue, Asheville, NC or phone 828-505-3440. Our hours are: Mon.-Sat. 8:00am-8:00pm and Sunday 8:00am-6:00pm.  Their web site is here. If you think you might want to sponsor one of them Angelica's page is here and Danica's page is here.

We will persist with this until we find them a home!!!!

Tarzan on Tuesday

A friend of Mom's emailed us about a cat who was being fostered by her neighbor for Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville.  His name is Tarzan and he is a black and white cow cat.  Even at his young age, he has already made the rounds of several shelters and now Brother Wolf has stepped in to help find a forever home for him.

His foster mom says he has a great combination of personality, affection and interaction.  He loves dogs.  His foster mom had a chihuahua and 3 pups staying with her and Tarzan played with them all very gently.  He is playful and cuddly - just an awesome cat!.  Tarzan is about a year old and a little small for his age, but great things do come in small packages! Please contact Tarzan's foster mom for info about him, aimee_flynn@yahoo.com

Feel free to repost this or post on Facebook or Twitter - the more the better.  Let's find this great guy a great home!

Thankful Thursday

From top  left going to the right,  Two Spot, Yoko, Woody and Smidge.

It is still hot here but the humidity has dropped a little.  We are thankful to be in a cool air conditioned house and to be safe in this heat.  We are also thankful Chica is still doing well - fluids only every 2 weeks now.  Today she gets her claws trimmed...ouch!

We have some great news today.  Sweet little Avon from Brother Wolf Rescue (We had her pic on our side bar for the longest time) has been adopted after over a year in a foster home.  Mom talked to her foster Mom and they said she got a great forever home so it was worth the wait.  She also told Mom that Yogi an 8 year old all black cat who had been in foster care for a year also found a home recently!

Pam, the Brother Wolf foster Mom, said they had a special dog that needed a home so we will put Sebastian on our blog in place of Avon.  Sebastian is just over a year and loves water, playing and is a great dog.  He was found homeless and covered in mange.  He is a lab mix and just waiting for his chance at a forever home. Check him out on the side bar.

The craft gallery Gallery of the Mountains where Mom works is going to help Brother Wolf Rescue get votes in the ASPCA Challenge (they can win up to $100,00) by  featuring cats and dogs from their rescue all month long in August.  Our Mom writes the blog so she will be linking artists with  pets to help raise awareness of this great no-kill shelter and to get people to adopt from them and to vote for them!  It all begins August 1!

Have a great weekend!

Formerly Feral and Forever Friday

Formerly Feral Sweetpea here with the post for today. Mom got a new DSLR camera for Christmas and can finally take photos of all us black cats indoors without just getting a blob with eyes!  Yay for Mom!

With Valentine's Day coming up, one of our local shelters has declared Feb 1-28 to be Black Tie Affair to help get their black cats adopted. Black cats are always the last to leave a shelter. They want to get the word out that according to animal behaviorist Temple Grandin who wrote the book Animals Make Us Human that black cats tend to have calmer and friendlier dispositions than other cats and are more social.

Today we are featuring Tuxedo cats or Billicats.  Even tho I am not quite one cuz I only have a white spot on my chest I am the spokescat for this week.

Way back months ago, we did a post about Avon from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue and looked today to find out she is still there and still looking for her forever home. We need to do something about this. This is Avon and we will let her tell her story.

I was rescued from an abusive home just days before I gave birth to 6 kittens. I arrived at my foster home with my six 3-day-old kittens and I then took on 2 more kittens who had been abandoned. I was a fantastic mother to these eight kittens. I am just over a year old. I am a VERY sweet gal. I love to cuddle. I talk to get your attention - I just love to be the center of attention now that my babies are on their own. Please call my foster mom so you can meet such a precious lady; her number is (828) 778-3011. Or you can contact Brother Wolf Rescue in Asheville, NC

Snow, Santa and Secret Paws

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas.  We have been snow bound for the past three days with the power going off and on!  Mom and Pop keep saying they have Cabin Fever - sure hope it is not contagious!

We got lots to share with you.  First off we got 8" of white stuff outside and it was pretty the first day but then the high winds and chilling cold came and made it scary to be outdoors.  We preferred to sit inside and look out at the birds.

Lily and Only checking out the crinkle sack.

Sweetpea and Mamacita laying with the new toys.

Santa gave us great stuff this year - Temptations and some new stuff called Catnip Delights made by The Goodlife Recipe - yum, those were real good.  We got a scratching board for the house and shelter, some Kookamunga Krazee Kitty catnip bubbles and a Furminator - whatever that is.  We wore out our tunnel and Mom said Santa would bring us one but he wasn't able to find one.  Instead we got a crinkle sack that can be opened at both ends - it's neat.  We all got salmon for breakfast on Christmas - that was delicious! Of course lots of little crinkle balls, bitty balls and toys for us to bat around.

Two Spot chasing catnip bubbles.

Al enjoying his salmon.

We joined Secret Paws this year but instead of gifts for us, Mom asked to have the presents donated to our local no-kill shelter Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, NC. The Florida Furkids of Friends FurEver were our Secret Paws and they were great - donating to Santa Paws Drive plus they sent a gift package  to the shelter.  We wrote about it on the Secret Paws blog. Thank you for the donations!

We got lots of Christmas cards - mailed and virtual - thanks to all for thinking of us over the holidays.  We will post them this week. Hopefully the wind will die down and the power will stay on! We are going to stay warm, nap and play with our new toys the rest of the week.  Have fun ya'll.

Forever Friday

Mom is a little under the weather again with a sinus infection from her allergies. She wanted to do a recap on all the homeless cats and dogs we posted who got homes but maybe next week. These guys are from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue's Underdog page - they have been at the shelter for a long time because of their color, breed, special needs or something. Please pass this on and help find them homes.

KEEVER is a silky black fellow with a sweet, soulful nature. Bonding with people is his trademark. He will follow you around and sit on your lap. In between playtimes, he loves to be brushed and petted. He is good with other cats. We've had this little sweetie for over a year, simply because of his color! Please call his foster mom at (828) 281-2885 to meet Keever.

Sally is a 3 year old chow mix looking for a human to show her kindness after living her whole life chained to the bumper of a car, going for days without food or water. She needs someone who will introduce her to all the world has to offer with patience. Once Sally trusts you, she will love you forever and snuggle and kiss you. She takes longer to warm up to men, than women, but with time can accept men. Sally is wonderful in her foster home. She taught herself to go to the bathroom only outside, by not wanting to dirty her kennel, when she was at the BWAR shelter. She has never had an accident in the house and is completely trustworthy when left alone. She will "gather" shoes and things from her human to keep with her when she sleeps, but has never destroyed anything. She does great with the cats in her foster home and will slowly be introduced to the dogs. She has spent time on leash at events with other dogs and done well. Sally would do best in a home without constant strangers visiting. She does learn to accept visitors over a period of time, but it does take multiple visits. Sally has been waiting almost a year now for her forever family to find her. She is an absolutely wonderful, loving girl who just needs that family to understand she had a rough start. If you're looking for a dog to love you with all she's got - Sally is the girl for you.

Both these great animals can be found at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, North Carolina.  Thanks for your help!

Forever Friday - Adopt a Less Adotpable Pet Week

We will end this week with two great pets - one with special needs and the other one a breed that most people don't want. Did you know pit bulls have the highest euthanasia rate of all breeds in shelters?  Most people are afraid of them but we know some real sweeties personally - it is the owner that creates a dog of any breed to be a violent dog by how they are trained.

Quincy, an orange kitten,  was abandoned apparently at a produce market, and a vendor called  Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, NC. He had a very bad eye infection that didn't respond to treatment, so they had the vet surgically remove his eyes. He's about 3 1/2 months old now, weighs 4 lbs. And he is a gregarious, playful guy who doesn't let lack of vision impede his joy in life. Quincy's goal is to have fun, and he plays for hours. The black kitten in the photos is Gina, who was also found abandoned, and they are best friends. They don't have to be adopted together, but Quincy needs to go where he'll have another kitten/cat to play with. Contact his foster mom Robbie Coleman at 828 670-0080 for more information on the adoption process.

Looking for a Pit Bull in the Asheville, NC area to post for today, we found out about a great organization called S.T.I.C.K.S. Org.(Supplyng Tech in County Kill Shelters) - they supply digital cameras to rural shelters to help them get their pets on Petfinders for better exposure and they also pull dogs out of high kill shelters and foster them until a better place can be found.  This dog is one they rescued from a high kill shelter.

Chewie is a 9 year old American bulldog mix. She is low maintenance, likes to lay around, cuddle, go on light walks, wont run off. She gets along well with people, dogs and cats. Spayed, shots, microchip. Chewie will make a lucky person a wonderful loving, loyal companion. Her Petfinder page is here. Please donate so they can buy more cameras or support the dogs they have rescued.

We hope you have learned as much has we have about special needs pets and how great they are - it has been fun.  Thanks for joining us this week.

We have a double whammy coming up on Monday - Mamacita and Rosa's Gotcha Day and our 300th post (which is actually today) so do come back by and help us celebrate.  Mom is giving away a copy of Gwen Cooper's book Homer's Odyssey about a blind cat who had a tremendous impact on her life.

Forever Friday with Casper and girls

Since we have a lot of white cats we thought we would feature some white beauties this week from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. They are the no-kill shelter that was in financial need a few weeks back. Thanks to all who helped them out, they are doing better now and hoping to raise awareness of the importance of no-kill shelters.

This is Casper who was rescued from the local animal shelter. He is one and one half years old and a very handsome white mancat. He was pretty scruffy looking when he was brought into Brother Wolf's care, but he's feeling better every day. Email bwarcatteam@gmail.com if you'd like to meet him!

This is Rose who is a young playful white kitty who needs a forever home. There are two others her age and all white - Blanche and Dorothy. Please help hem find someone that will give them love and a caring home.

For more info on all these cats and more please visit Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. Pass the word on to others and make sure your Congress members know that you want your community to be no-kill. For more info on creating a no-kill community go to Maddie's Fund or No Kill Nation on Facebook.

Forever Friday with Tina and Peace

Today we are visiting an animal shelter in the High Country near Boone, NC. The Watauga Humane Society is a low kill shelter with both dogs and cats.

Someone saw a car slow down and toss Tina out the car window. Tina is very people friendly despite her experience. Tina is two and has been here at the Watauga Humane Shelter since December 2008. Here she is posing pretty in the cats room. Please help find her a forever home!

This beautiful sweet guy was adopted from the shelter as a kitten and just recently ended up in a shelter in Charleston, SC. His owner was contacted and did not want Peace back so one of the shelter employees went to Charleston and got him. Peace is an amazing cat and would fit into any family. He is 2 years old and long haired. Please help find him a forever home by re posting this everywhere!

More info on adopting these two great cats can be found online at the Watauga Humane Society.

UPDATE - Bella from last week's Forever Friday is still at the shelter. Franzia, featured a few weeks back, from Brother Wolf Rescue was adopted! The other cats Clubber and Big Boy are still available - just search for Forever Friday on this blog to see their posts.

URGENT - Our only no-kill shelter - Brother Wolf Rescue is having severe financial problems. They are determined not to close no matter what it takes but they need help. Please help in any way you can. Every town needs a no-kill shelter! (The local paper did an article on them and helped raise awareness of their situation - things look better but they still need help. Please read the letter on their home page from the Executive Director thanking all who have donated so far.)

Thanks for helping us help homeless pets!
