Slan Darby Until We Meet Again (2000 - 2018)

Darby threw a clot on Sunday afternoon July 1st.  She had been diagnosed with hyperthyroid in December 2017 but in May she was having trouble breathing.  The vet put her on Lasiz to drain the fluid around her heart.  She was feeling better but last week we took her in again as she was coughing and wheezing.  The fluids were gone in her chest so the x-ray gave us more information - she had an enlarged heart - cardiomyopahty.  Her blood pressure was normal, as was her thyroid. Along with the Lasix and Enalapril, the vet prescribed a very low dose of aspirin to prevent clots.  She had a good few days but then Sunday morning I noticed she was very restless even tho her breathing was normal. She wanted to be off the bed so I put her on the floor. She was walking in circles, falling over. She had had a stroke/a clot in the brain.

Darby terrorized poor Yoko in her early years.

We took her in to the emergency vet. They were very busy as usual. While we were waiting to be seen, Darby had a saddle thrombosis.  Both Don and I were holding her when the vet gave her the final injection.  I had hoped to spare her this pain and confusion but it was not meant to be.

Just after her spaying

Darby was a little spitfire of a cat from the beginning. A neighbor alerted us during the winter of 2000 that a small grey and white cat was living under our rental house in the crawlspace.  We began putting food out for her and were able to trap her on St Patrick's Day.  Because she would chase off all other cats outside, I thought she was a boy and named her Darby.  Once she was spayed I realized my gender mistake but the name stuck.

Celebrating her Gotcha Day

Darby took a long time to tame, spending weeks in our bathroom while we worked with an animal behaviorist to calm her fears.  She would swat our hands if they came to close.  We eventually got to pet her through a towel and then just with out hands.  She still was quick to swat if she did not like what we were doing to her.  She did bond with me over playing and petting.  She preferred people to our cats. She tolerated the other cats more so in the past few years.

Darby loved playing with a ribbon, catching it with her paw as it flew over her.  She napped in the funniest places - perched high on several pillows in the spare room like the Princess and the Pea story.  Often she slept face down in our clean laundry, snoring, whistling and chirping as she dosed.

A favorite game she liked was when the sun came in the western side of the house in the bedroom I would make shadow puppets on the wall for her to chase. She would go and sit on the bed, waiting for the puppet show to start even on cloudy days! She also delighted in the laser toy, chasing hte red dot until she was pooped.

Catching the red dot

Playing shadow puppets with me

These last few weeks, Darby enjoyed sitting in the bedroom window watching the birds and goats outside. The window had always been a favorite place to sit.  In autumn, she would try to catch the leaves as they fell in front of the window from the maple tree outside.

The other cats were afraid of her - she would run at them growling and swat them. if Darby wanted the couch , no one dared to sit there so she would have it to herself.  Her favorite place was the office chair  at my computer desk.  We had to share the chair with her or let her sit next to the computer if we wanted to work there.

My Princess and her Pea

We were treated to a free session with an animal psychic for the blog in 2014.  This is what she said about Darby then - She described Darby as a happy cat who gives much love back to us: she is very affectionate. Nancy did not see anything negative with Darby.  She stated that Darby had deep feelings and was very intuitive.  Darby can pick up on things without being told - she reads our energy.  In this way she felt that Darby is a healer, a cat that stays with us when we are not feeling well.  Nancy explained that Darby needed companionship, to be constantly reassured.  She learned to be quick and very sharp living on her own outside before we took her in.  She can take care of herself in spite of her small size.

By Lou Belcher

Darby was beautiful with tuxie markings and eyes that were either green or gold depending on the light.  Artists and blogger Lou Belcher did a drawing of her a few years back.  I will treasure it always.

Sitting in her window recently.

I thought we had more time after last week's vet visit and so did the vet.  My time was spent caring for her, making sure she got all her meds each morning and evening.  Sweetpea is the last of the older cats.  The house seems so empty now.

Darby is buried with her blue paid ribbon next to Mamacita and Mr. Kitty on our land. I will always remember my feisty little grey tuxie for all of my years.  Until we meet again sweet girl..

PS - I apologize for not visiting all who commented on Mamacita's post here and on Facebook.  I will get to all of you eventually but my heart needs to heal from all this loss.  Thank you for stopping by and for caring.

It's St Pat's and Darby's 16th Gotcha Day!

Darby here today...St. Pat's and  Thankful Thursday to boot.  We are so very grateful for each and every one of you.  Knowing you care  helps us get through the ups and downs of life with 15 formerly feral cats!

Sweetpea with her paw

Before we get to my party - we had a serious vet visit for 17 year old Sweetpea this week.  She had not been eating and was losing weight.  It turned out to be a few things - she is hyperthyroid, had an infected tooth which was removed and she had an infected claw on her right front paw which was cleaned up.  All things have been taken care of  - she is hobbling along on a bandaged foot and sequestered in the master bedroom/bath for a week.  She needs to have shredded paper for litter until her paw heals over to keep it from getting re-infected.  Thanks so much for all the purrs for her.

Me not long after I was caught and spayed.
Now for me - hard to believe it has been 16 years since Mom and Pop took me in.  I was living under their house in a crawlspace with a possum!  He would come out at night and I would come out during the day.  I was so feisty to other cats, protecting my territory, Mom thought I was a boy and named me the Irish male name of  Darby!  Oh well.  A lot of feral cats lived in this neighborhood and I just showed up all by myself  in the winter that year.  She figured I was born in the fall of 1999.

Early shot of me

I was tough to tame and Mom spent months working with me and an animal behaviorist to get to even pet me.  I would smack her hand with my paw.  I was scared and didn't know what was going on.  Even now I get rattled easy and can still smack the beans but they still love me.  I really bonded with mom since she spent so much time with me in the beginning.

Me at our old house.

Anyway, I am so happy to have been gotcha'd by the beans.  I have had a great life - I lived in their shop with Minnie for a few months until we all moved in one house together.  Then we all moved to where we are now  with all the white cats and I love it.  I enjoy looking out the window at goat, pony, turkey and bird TV, helping Mom on the computer, hanging out with Pop when he watches TV.  I don't even mind all my many brothers and sisters.  It sure beats living on my own outdoors.  Feral cats deserve love too!

Helping Mom

So put on some green and help yourself to the nip snacks and green munchies in honor of St Pat's and me!  Thanks for coming and for being our friends.  Happy St. Patrick's Day!

World Smile Day - Oct 3

Eating tuna make Ivy smile.

Today is World Smile Day. And all us cats are official World Smile Day Ambassadors.  Do an act of kindness - help one person smile!

World Smile Day is celebrated on the first Friday in the month of October every year. The idea of World Smile Day was coined and initiated by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts. (Mom's hometown.)

Harvey Ball is known to have created the Smiley Face in 1963. The World's first World Smile Day was held in the year 1999 and has been held annually since.  After Harvey died in 2001, the "Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation" was created to honor his name and memory. The slogan of the Smile Foundation is "improving this world, one smile at a time." The Foundation continues as the official sponsor of World Smile Day each year. (info from Wikipedia)

Wordy Wednesday - Tabitha Does a Canidae Review

Me, Tabitha posing with the sample Canidae Treats

Tabitha here today with this post.  Sorry we have not been around - Mom is busy getting things ready for Pop's surgery in two weeks.  He will not be able to do much for two weeks after and  it will be a month before he is back to normal so we will have to help mom take care of Pop and us!  We will fill you in closer to the date.

Now for our Canidae review -

We were sent sample packets of Canidae Grain Free Treats with Fresh Salmon and with Fresh Chicken.  Well the salmon flavor is almost gone already .  Mom had a hard time to take a photo of us eating them cuz we wolf them down so fast!

Callie is trying to will the bag open! (Kitty Vulcan mind meld maybe?)

The treats are small and heart shaped so we can eat them easily since most of us are seniors.  The crunchy texture helps to clean our teeth (for those of us who still have some...er.. teeth that is.)

Callie got the bag open!

For more info on these great delish treats by Canidae, go to Canidae web site or their Facebook page.  Canidae also hosts a Free Stuff Friday Sweepstakes.  They give away a Canidae item free every week.  You can enter here on Facebook  - Free Stuff Friday  We are certainly going to enter every week - maybe we can win some more free treats! Whoo Hoo - free stuff!!!

Ivy enjoyed them even tho you has hardly any teeth left.

We had no internets yesterday when we posted this so Mom will catch up today!

Darby was won over and listed them as her fav.

Happy Gotcha Day Darby!

Me, Darby Queen of St Pat's Day!

Welcome to my 14th Gotcha Day.  I will be 15 years old this year since I was most likely born in November of the previous year.  My how time flies! "St. Patrick's Day is an enchanted time -- a day to begin transforming winter's dreams into summer's magic" says Adrienne Cook. . I am really happy I got gotted on St. Pat's.  Make lots of wishes today  - cuz you never know ...they could come true!   This year we will show some of us wearing the green  along with me, the Gotcha Day Girl Darby!

Ivy looks so dapper with her hat and garland of shamrocks!

Georgie wonders why she has a funny green hat on her head!  hehehe

Only submitted to Mom putting the beer mug chain around his neck.  Without our Chica, Yoko and Joey, Mom does not have anyone who will calmly let her dress them up.  She has to trick them or get them before they even know what is going on.

So cats, put your green on, hold up your nip milk shakes and let us toast today - "May the dreams you hold dearest, be those which come true. The kindness you spread, keep returning to you."  Thank you for being the dear friends that you are.  Kick back and help yourself to nip cookies, Lucky Charm nibbles (who remembers those?) and nip flavored cupcakes!

Al, Ivy and Darby Consult with a Pet Pyschic

Albert

A few days ago we were contacted by Psychic Source, an online psychic group, for a free pet psychic consult with Nancy.  I was told to email a photo of the cats we wanted Nancy to read so I chose Albert, Ivy and Darby.  At the arranged time, I placed a phone call to Nancy and we began the 30 minute consult.  The cats were in the other room either asleep or watching bird TV.  I will write about what Nancy said and then after, how it related to the cat  and us.

Albert - Nancy honed in on Al, our deaf cat,  first and wanted to talk about him. She asked how long we had had him (since he was a kitten) and how old he was (9).   Before he came to us Nancy said that he felt rejected and without support, even by his mother.  He struggled alone and feeling excluded. Now she said he does get support from us.  Nancy saw a male figure in Al's life giving him steady reliable support. This male figure is Al's rock. He is dependable for Al and Al wants to please him very much. Their relationship is very stabilizing to Al.

She explained that Al does have a cold side to him, that he can be domineering, arrogant and cut off from his emotions.  Like a person who has shut down his emotions, he can be overbearing because of this. In his own room, Al is confident and peaceful: he feels safe. He loves his humans.  She said that when Al lashes out at the cats or us, it is fear based.  Some cats pull back in fear but Al becomes aggressive.  Nancy suggested trying to find an online support group for deaf/aggressive cats for us to help him feel more peaceful.  She stated that All needs extra loving to make up for how he felt in his early months.

Al was found by the side of a highway by me as a tiny 8 week kitten.  He may have been dumped there by humans or wandered off from his litter.  Obviously he had been on his own a while since he was covered in bruises and cuts and matted.  He was very passive and cute as a kitten but as he matured he began to become a bully.  Al is very close to my husband and they do have a special bond.  Al looks to him for comfort when he is upset.  Albert does not relate well to other cats, does not pick up their behavioral cues and ends up in fights with them.  Snowball is out dominant cat in this group but Al is always confronting him.

I think Nancy did get an accurate picture of Al - and his feeling rejected and dominant explains his aggressive behavior. We are going to try to find a support group online to help him - if anyone knows of one, let us know.  We love Al but he has been our problem child since he matured.  For his safety and the safety of the other white cats, Al has his own room and is let out only if we are there to supervise.

Ivy

Ivy - The first thing Nancy said about Ivy is that she struggles with her vision.  She described her as tiny and very loving with a strong bond with me.  Outside she explained that she suffered from the other cats. Inside with us Ivy feels special, protected and safe.  I asked if she was OK and Nancy replied that Ivy was content , feeling harmony and balance in her life.  Nancy felt that she is not ready to leave this earth and will be with us for several more years.  She told me that I look like an "angel" to Ivy and that I have done the best I could do to care for her.

I have noticed that Ivy seems to hesitate when getting up on furniture and often is startled when other cats come s close.  Her vision may be the reason so we will take her to a vet to check this out.  She is a small cat - at six pounds and in spite of being feral for seven years is affectionate and loving to both my husband and myself.  I am her constant companion.  Unless she is sleeping, she is right next to me or on my lap.She comes to me when she wants something quacking her funny quack.  She was the last of the ferals in this group to be brought indoors and I fear that her life was challenging.  Nancy was right when she said she was picked on outside - the male cats were trying to drive her off to start their own feral colony. Ivy is 16 and has FIV so hearing that she would be with us a while longer made me happy - I hope this will be the case.

Darby looking out the window.
Darby - Nancy saw that Darby was in great shape physically and was surprised that she was 15 years old this year.  She described Darby as a happy cat who gives much love back to us: she is very affectionate.

Darby was found living under our rented house in another neighborhood, not a part of the main feral group.  She about six months old then and alone.  I thought she was a male cat watching her defend her territory with other cats twice her size, running them off.  She was the hardest to tame when we took her indoors, not even allowing us to pet her without smacking our hands. Now, she has a close bond with both my husband and me, sitting with us on the computer chair or on the sofa. She will seek one of us out always wanting to be near us.  If one of us is sick, Darby will be the cat sitting next to us the whole time, making biscuits and purring.

Nancy ended the session with a little more information about Albert and then about me.  Nancy said once again that Albert blocks off his emotions.  He is afraid to give of himself to only get rejected again.  She reiterated that Al had no loving mother and was lost and alone as a kitten until "angels" stepped in.  She mentioned seeing "angels" around my cats. Nancy saw me as an angel for these cats, helping them recover, bringing balance, health and energy back into their lives.

Hope you enjoyed this post!  This was great fun and I feel I learned a lot about why Albert acts the way he does.  I found Nancy to be easy to talk to, pleasant and very kind.  If you would like more info about this psychic group, click on Psychic Source.  Nancy's personal link is here.

Model Monday

Mom has joined an online photography group that requires posting a photograph a day for 365 days - not easy to do.  She is having fun and of course many days we are the subjects of her photos.  So on Mondays she will post her portraits of us - some are black and white, others kind of poster like, some are funny and others just cool.  Hope you like them and check back often. Today our sweet Darby is the model!

Too Many Cats???

Pop was trying to watch TV the other night and he had to share his seat with one, two, three...wait four cats!

Ivy was right next to him.  Then Tabitha and finally Woody. (Wherever Tabitha is, Woody is.)

And Darby was precariously perched on the arm of the sofa, behind Pop. Don't think we have enough seats in our house for us and Pop!  Do you take over the seats in your house too?

P.S. Mom is joining in on 365 project - a photo a day group.  She will be posting them on her other blog here if you want to check out her pics.

Darby's 13th Gotcha Day and St Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day and a Happy 13th Gotcha Day to our sweet Darby! We caught her all those years ago after she had been living in the crawlspace under the house we rented.  We put a kennel cage on the porch for her to use to keep warm and snug that winter and once she got used to it,  we made a trap out of it with a string tied to the door.

Watching Darby

We set the kennel right outside the front door  and we all watched from inside the house - Chica, Yoko and Sweetpea too.  Once Darby went in, we pulled the door shut from inside the house.  Got her!  She was not happy but she was safe.  We got her spayed and tamed her - now that was a long story in and of itself.  She was one wild kitty.

Darby at her desk

But now she is a love bug and a Momma's girl.  All she wants is to sit next to Mom especially when Mom works at the desk in her office. As little as she is, no one messes with her much.  She can dish it out but does not like to get it back.  Mamacita  will hide and wait for Darby to run down the hall and then jump out to ambush her.  Poor Darby runs like the devil.  If it happens enough Darby checks all the hiding spots before she ventures down the hall so she doesn't run the gauntlet.

So enough of the stories. Since Darby is a BIG fan of nip - that is our theme today.  Help yourself to apps, niptinis and lots of  St Patty's Day foods.  Thank you for coming and for being our friends.

Thank you so very much for all the kind words, cards, emails and posts for our beloved Chica.  Your support helps us all thru a very sad time.

May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks.
May your heart be as light as a song.
May each day bring you bright happy hours,
That stay with you all year long.
For each petal on the shamrock
This brings a wish your way
Good health, good luck, and happiness
For today and every day.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to each and every one of you!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Darby here today to wish you all a wonderful day filled with love and joy!  It is a very special day in our house cuz it is Pop's birthday and our Mom and  Pop's wedding anniversary too.  21 years ago they got hitched in Florida!

A little catch-up....Mom has had a health issue to deal with and has not been able to blog.  That seems to be under control right now..whew! All is well other than that - Snowball is doing fine and is adjusting to his new routine and food choices.  Chica is getting frailer but still geitng around and doing OK for her age.  We have had a mild winter and our daffodils are actually starting to bloom.

Mom will get the auction items for Snowball's fund raiser out this week  - she promises.  She appreciates your patience. Hope we get to blog again next week or even before.  Thank you for friendship - you will never know how much it means to all of us.  Have a great Valentine's Day!

Shadow Play with Darby

ATTENTION - Yoko's Gotcha Day is always on Mothers Day so will be celebrated as usual on Sunday May 13! Please come back for the party!

I have a new friend that I play with almost every afternoon!   His name is Mr. Shadow!  I go wait in the bedroom for him to visit.

He shows up on the wall by the fan.  He plays hide and seek with me and makes all kinds of funny animals and critters.

I try very hard to catch him but I never do.

Mom thinks it's funny when I go to the bed every day and wait for my friend to visit!  I just sit and stare at the wall and he most always comes by!  Mom is usually getting ready for work at this time so she sees him too.

Do you have a Mr. Shadow to play with?
