Au Revoir Mon Coeur Callie 2006-2023

It has taken me some time to process this one and to be able to write Callie's tribute. It never gets easier to say goodbye to my beloved cats. I feel it is even harder as I get older.

Callie had been on hyperthyroid meds for five years, blood pressure meds for 2 years and recently showed that she was in early stage CKD. In the past two years she struggled with her health having to have her med dosages adjusted several times. She had not been feeling well for a few weeks when we took her to the vet this spring. She had a mass on her spleen and non regenerative anemia. At her advanced age of 17, almost 18, with other health issues, we opted to keep her comfortable rather than be aggressive with cancer treatment.

Callie napping on the porch with Sam a few weeks back

For 6 weeks after her diagnosis. Callie did well on her protocol of prednisolone, cbd oil, and other natural treatments. She was eating, using the litterbox etc.  She developed ascetites in her abdomen a few days before she passed. Her body was not even processing the subcutaneous fluids anymore. I knew it was time.

Don sharing his pizza crust with Callie.  She also loved rice cakes, crackers and toast.

Knowing we would be letting her go, we spent all our time with her the day before. She sat outside with me on the screen porch while my phone played healing music. She ate well and enjoyed her favorite foods.. it was a bittersweet pleasure to spoil her these past few weeks. She was alert and calm, taking in the sun and scenery on the ride to the vet. I had checked in with our animal communicator and Callie trusted us to know when to let her go. Her passing was quick and peaceful.. Don and I held her on our laps sending her off with love and Reiki light.. She left us Friday July 14 in the

 late morning.

Callie, 2006, after we found her.

Ten years ago I  found Callie in the parking lot of the Grove Park Inn in Asheville where I worked nights at the time. It was a dark November evening when I saw this tiny cat meowing for all she was worth, running up to the people walking through the parking lot. I was concerned that the drivers could not see her  so I scooped her up in my arms and put her in my car. We had 18 cats at home in our sanctuary at that time. I figured we would foster her until we found her humans.

Callie did have a micro chip but the woman who adopted her gave her to a friend after three years due to her older cat attacking Callie. Turns out the friend moved out of the area 6 months prior to me finding Callie. We don't know if she gave Callie to someone else or if Callie was on her own for 6 months. Callie was thin,  full of worms, and not not in great shape. We settled her in a small room in our home to recover in peace and quiet.. Basically she just ate, slept and used the litterbox. Poor girl was worn out. By the time Callie recovered her health,  we had fallen for her sweet nature and knew that we were her forever home. I only wish we had found her sooner.

Callie with her bowl

On the dining counter

She loved kibbles but we don't feed dry food except as treats so she would have to beg for some.  Callie would sit on the eating counter overlooking the sink and stare - usually it worked and she got kibbles in her bowl. If that didn't work, Callie would run ahead of us to the kitchen and sit next to her bowl with a pitiful expression on her face. That worked every time. I called her my begging Buddha cat. She always seemed to be sitting next to her empty bowl.

Perhaps because of her background with the bully older cat or living on her own outside, Callie avoided the other cats initially. They were just curious, not aggressive. Callie loved to just be with us. She was not a lap cat but liked to be in the same room as us and eventually would feel at home enough to sit on the chair arm or sofa with us. This was her way of asking for some loving. She slowly progressed to sitting next to me on the sofa with her front paws on my leg. Eventually she slept on the bed with us down by my feet. During her last weeks she cuddled next to me by my pillow.

Crow watching

Callie bonded mostly with me. She would  sit and stare at me, with such love in her eyes!  She played a little bit with nip toys. I don’t think she had any toys before or at least no one played with her.  Callie loved to  watch the birds outside the window or out on the screen porch.  She got the zoomies almost every morning and would tear through the house from one end to the other. She stayed tiny about the size of Darby and Sweetpea – about six to seven pounds tops.

Maybe why this one is very difficult is that Callie looks so much like my heart cat Chica who passed away on my birthday in March 2013 the same year I found Callie. Callie came to me a lot like Angel Chica did. Both were lost outside at night, running up to people, hoping to find a friend.  Both just let me pick them up and tuck them in my car. Callie had black tortie colors on her back so when she was curled up napping, she looked like Angel Chica from the back.  It made me smile.

Callie

When I went out, Callie was usually the one who was waiting inside the door for me welcoming me home. She helped me write holiday cards, let me photograph her with props for my cards and blog posts, slept next to me while I read. Wherever I was, Callie was close by.

Helping me write holiday cards.

Callie's' markings and colors were gorgeous. Her whiskers were spectacular. She was very photogenic .I had lots of nicknames for her - Callie Calico, Cal, Callie Wallie, Callie Girl, Baby Girl.

In a pensive mood.

She loved to sit up on the dining counter overlooking the kitchen sink, watching us get the cat's food ready. Sometimes she would dose off sitting there.

Callie fell asleep waiting for food.

With milk on her face.

She was the most easy going, laid back sweet girl. When the other cats bothered her she walked away. She could stand her ground if she wanted but never was harsh with them. She was funny, smart, a delight to have in our lives. I do believe she was sent by Chica to be my second heart cat. Callie did not replace Chica but brought her own elegance, warmth, companionship and love into our lives. She helped me heal from the loss of Chica and filled that hole in my heart. Now who will fill the Callie size hole?

We wrapped her body in pink fleece with one of her favorite catnip toys. She is buried on our land with a bouquet of wildflowers on her grave. We will have a stone made for her at a later date.

I have already received signs from Callie from the Other Side - a pair of goldfinches came to the window, nibbling on the sunflowers outside. They came the day she passed. They did not come by before and have not since. That night of her passing, I woke up to the numbers 11:11 on my clock - a sign someone from the Other Side is reaching out. She has come to me twice now in dreams, young and frisky like she used to be years ago. Goodbye my heart, until we meet again, sweet Callie.

Happy Gotcha Day to Callie and Snowball!

Me Snowball

Hi everyone, it is me Snowball hosting today for my 10th Gotcha Day.  Since Callie was Gotcha'd on Nov. 1 three years ago and me on Nov. 2, I am being gracious enough to share the day with her.

It has been an uneventful year for me so that is good - no health issues or anything. Well, there was one thing.  I did have an acupuncture session or two for my megacolon a few months ago and it helped. Our cat house has only six other cats besides me now so it is nice and roomy with just the few of us. Al is still trying to be top cat but all the others know that cat is ME!  Let Al think what he wants as long as he doesn't mess with my status.

Life is good and I am enjoying this nice warm fall we have had.  I am hoping for a warm winter too but with some rain or snow (just a little). I know today I will be getting extra love, cuddles and treats...yum.

Callie with a sugarskull

Now a bit about our other Gotcha Day kitty, sweet girl Callie.  It is hard to believe that has only been with us for three years.  It seems like she has been here forever...in a good way.  She is getting along with the other cats much better and is even trying to boss a few around (like Mamacita and Rosa) but Mom won't let her get away with that.  She is a bit younger so still has a lot of energy - every morning before breakfast Callie gets the zoomies and runs all thru the house, even jumping over Mom still sleeping on the bed!  She is silly and fun.  She too will get treats and lots of cuddles from the beans today.

Hope you enjoy our party today - a Day of the Dead theme.  I think we might have done this one before but no matter.  Mom even decorated the driveway  with Day of the Dead stuff so you can find out house easier.

Fill up your plates with sweets, snacks and of course nip margaritas, and dance to the music.  You can even dress up for the occasion too if you want. Thanks so much for stopping by.  We love you guys!

Getting Ready for Halloween

Me

Callie here today -You guys know how much Mom loves Halloween!  We are helping her get ready by wearing our special Halloween themed bandanas by Jodi, our IG friend.  Each one is reversible and attaches to your collar.  We don't wear collars so Mom used a ribbon.

Only models the other side of mine - spooky black with spider webs

Mr Kitty

The shop is BellaLovesAlex and features hand made kitty bandanas and bow ties for all seasons and holidays. They are purrfectly made and easy to wear.  If you are too late for this Halloween, then check out her fall and Christmas ones. Anything from this shop would make wonderful gifts fr your family and friends. Follow BellaLovesAlex on Instagram @bellalovesalex or on Facebook

Jodi's cat Gizmo from her Etsy page with her orange bow tie.

(Mom didn't get anything for writing this - she just likes Jodi's hand made items for cats. Mom only buys American hand made!)

Tabitha wears the flip side of Mr Kitty's bandana

Mom also put up some Halloween decor at the base of our driveway.  A scary witch with a gravestone, with pumpkins and mums.Have you put any Halloween decorations up at your house?

Our cat shelter is in the  left corner

We will be back with a special Halloween post with us in new never before seen costumes.  Before that we will remember our dear Minnie who left us last year on Oct. 29.  My Gotcha Day and Snowball's comes up right after Halloween so we should be online quite a bit for a while! Hope to see you all then!!

P.S. An update on us.  Normie was at the vet's twice this month for constipation.  It turns out the culprit was his Greenie dental treats.  Don't use those. We threw ours away. Then Sweetpea had a sore paw - her dew claw had grown in again so they had to cut all the claws way back.  We will have to keep an eye on her claws. She is doing well on her herbal thyroid and kidney meds.

Winning Monday

Me checking out the goodies

Callie here posting today.  To quote Charlie Sheen...winning...Monday is here.  We have the winners of our blogoversary post and we are showing off our prizes for winning Ellen's blog 15 and Meowing's Valentine give-away - all handmade - a nip flavored mat to nap on, two nip toys and an eyeglass case for Mom.

Us first...the kitties were very surprised that they got a fun package in the mail from Ellen and her furry gang. I noticed the goodies right away and went over to inspect them.  The catnip toy caught my fancy and off I went, batting it all over the kitchen and living room floors.  Mom tried to get a picture but I was just a blur!

Mr. Kitty with the nip toy

Mr. Kitty pounced on the other catnip toy.  He was snockered in no time.  Rolling on the mat and even sucking the mat - have some control, boy!

Even quiet Mamacita come out from her nap nook to check out the mat. She was a bit more subdued than Mr Kitty but enjoyed it nevertheless.  Mom liked her eyeglass case too.  Thank you Ellen - we love our prizes!

Mamacita on the mat
Now for the winners of our blogoversary post - drum roll.....for Prize #1  - a cat coloring book for the human and cats toys and treats - the winner is none other than Ellen of 15 and Meowing and no this was not  fixed! Just a lucky coincidence! The question was who is our deaf cat - Al or Albert is the answer.

No one got the answer quite correct to question #2 - how many cats did we have when we first began blogging.  But Jackie and Flynn of  Our Life with Flynn (and Angel Eric) guessed the closest with 18. If you didn't know the answer, you would have had to look at all the photos on the side bar, subtracted the kitties from before, then the seven who went to the Bridge since 2009 and added two for Callie and Mr Kitty who joined us in later years - and that equals 20.  We had 20 cats when Mom started up the blog.  Years ago when people asked how many cats we had, Pop would mumble the answer - he was a bit embarrassed at first but most people we met had even more!  The prize for the question was  cat note cards, toys and treats.

And for the final question - most of our cats were formerly what? Isabel, a Google + follower, guessed wild (or feral) and was the first to guess that. The prize of a book about cats, and assorted cat treats and toys will be sent to her.

Thank you for coming to our blogoversary and for being our friends.  Mom says she will try to post more often.  Her big 60th birthday is coming up next week - it is also the 3rd anniversary of Angel Chica's passing. I am sure we will post for that so see ya then!

Happy Heart Day!

It is my (Smidge) turn (at last) to do  a post!  We are very lucky to have all of us here together for another Valentine's Day. It is a very special day at our house - Pop's birthday is today and the beans's 23rd Wedding Anniversary also.

Callie

Being a cold wintry month, February would not seem like a month for love but all of Pop's family got married this month - his parents married on Feb 14 just like Mom and Pop did.  His younger brother married on Feb 16th and his older brother John who just went to the Bridge married his late first wife on Feb. 26 and his second wife Ann on Feb. 11.

Georgie

According to Wikipedia....Feb. 14th was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). In Europe, Saint Valentine's Keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart".

Wishing you a day filled with love -  whether it is furry love, romantic love, friend love or just love!  Go. Be. Love!

Happy Rubber Ducky Day - Jan 13!

Tabitha examines her rubber duckies.
It is that time of year again - Rubber Ducky Day!  Mom loves to post pictures of us with our Rubber Duckies.

Georgie is more sleepy than interested in hers.
Instead of the usual "Rubber Ducky Song"  sung by Ernie of Sesame Street fame - today we have a cool video of Little Richard singing the song.  Waay cooler, right?

If you can't see the You Tube video then go here.

Callie poses for a Rubber Ducky Day portrait.
Did you know that the rubber ducky was inducted into the  the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2013?  The museum, located in Rochester NY explained - "With their bright color, smooth texture, and (for some) squeaky or quacky sounds, rubber ducks sharpen toddlers’ senses. Their presence in the bathtub soothes youngsters’ fears of water and water immersion and makes good clean fun of the routine hygiene they’re learning."

Two Spot snuggles with his duckies.
Another trivia bit on rubber duckies - On Aug. 8, 1981, Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer — nicknamed “Donald Duck” — jumped into a 79° seal tank at the city’s National Aquarium, clutching a rubber duck and wearing a Victorian bathing suit, in a stunt to draw attention to the institution.

Snowball is debating whether he wants to be near these funny yellow things.

Norm looks perturbed that the duckies have joined him in his bed.
Happy Rubber Ducky Day to y'all!!!!

Nov 1 - Callie's First Gotcha Day

It is my first Gotcha Day and I doubt I have ever had one before.  Mom found me in the parking lot at night when she got off work.  I knew a good Mom when I saw her and ran up to her meowing like crazy.  She couldn't resist even tho she knew Pop would blow his stack at another cat.  But I won him over too. and here I am a year later.

I love it here and have settled right in.  I love kibbles but they don't feed dry foo so I have to beg for some.  I like to sit on the eating counter overlooking the sink and stare - usually it works and I get kibbles in my bowl.

If that doesn't work, then I run ahead of the beans to the room they are going and sit next to the bowl in there with a pitiful expression on my cute face.  That's gets them every time.  Mom calls me her begging Buddha Cat - I always sit next to an empty bowl.

I look good and feel good now - I was thin and had all kinds of worms initially - yuck.  Probably from living outside.  Mom did track down my original owner and she gave me up cuz she had an older cat who picked on me all the time.  The lady who took me must have left me behind when she moved out west cuz Mom found me months later in the same area but no one knew how to contact her.

I avoid other cats and stay to myself but love Mom and Pop.  The others don't bother me but I guess I am just  scared cuz I got picked on in my old home. I am not a lap cat but love to sit next to the beans and will go ask to be petted if I feel like I want some lovin'.  I even sleep on the bed with them - way down on the foot so I don't bother Pop.   I guess three is the charm for me - I love my forever home.

Please help yourself to our nip apps - raw nip, nip treats and a nip 'nana for each of you! Have fun and thanks for coming to my party.  Don't forget that Snowball is having his party on Sunday!  A lot of partying here!

P.S. we are supposed to get snow on Sat.  so if your comments don't get posted, our power went off.  We hope that doesn't happen cuz I want to enjoy my first party!
