Farewell Sam 2006 - 2023

                                                            A young Sam

We let our sweet funny Sam a month ago on Dec 23, 2023.

He was 17. I waited a month to post

Sam's tribute. It has taken me this long to process

losing two cats

to cancer a few months apart.

First Callie in July and then Sam in December..

Sam with his mom and siblings

Sam  began having dental issues few months ago.

We changed

vets to get another opinion. They

d Sam was responding to the treatment.

But he also had unregulated thyroid even on the

highest dose of Felimazole. This usually

means some form of thyroid cancer. His kidneys began

to fail during his last week with us.

We were giving him subcutaneous fluids daily but it

was not enough. We could no longer keep

 him comfortable.

                                                    Sam and Woody as kittens

Sam or Sam Sam, Sam I Am as we called him, was a quiet,

independent, feisty boy. He hissed at everything new.

He even hissed at me sometimes but he never bit o

scratched us. When he was still feral, he lost weight

and I trapped him to bring to the vet. Turns out he had

parasites so Sam lived on our enclosed porch in

large dog kennel so I could administer his meds

for 2 weeks. That may be why I got hissed at so much.

                                                            Sam seeking alone time.

Sam lived his life on his own terms. He was not a playful

cat, preferring catnip and catnip toys to other toys.

He did like boxes or kitty cubes. He liked his alone time

when he was not napping in a pile with his buddies.

He was a cat's cat, preferring to be with his cat buddies

and litter mates than with people including us..

He slept with the other cats, and ate with them,

 rarely leaving the group.

He would slowly worm his way into a cat pile to nap.

Sam preferred Snowball and Norm's company

as a young man cat. Sam liked his food, catnip and

cat company. He grew to be quite a handsome

and good sized  boy.

                                                             Sam and Two Spot

Sam in front, Two Spot and Only behind

Sam's siblings were Georgie, Woody, and Norm.

He was named after Sam on Cheers.

This group was the second litter for his mom Lily.

And he was the last of his litter left with us.

Sam was the only one of our cats who had his ear tipped.

 We had seven white cats

at one time so it helped to know who was who.

 The others had some distinguishing

characteristics but Sam did not.

This way I knew who was Sam.

Sam spent the majority of his years in the cat shelter

with his white siblings and Albert.

The building had a large screened porch and

an indoor area that was heated. He could go in

and out through the cat door.  When Woody passed in 2021,

we brought Two Spot, Sam and Smidge

inside the house with us as the cat numbers

had gone down considerably.

                                                                        Hissing Sam.

Sam front and center with Two Spot and Georgie

Of course he hid under the bed in his new place

and hissed but eventually decided it was not so bad.

He loved sitting on the screen porch, or on the beds.

He never became a lap cat but did enjoy

lounging with us on the sofa.

He adjusted well to frequent

vet visits and liked the open top carrier

so he could check out the scenery.

When we took Sam to the vet,

we usually took another cat

with him to have an exam at the same time.

When we let Sam out of the travel cage he would

invariably go in the carrier with the other cat.

Safety in numbers maybe?

Sam in Two Spot's carrier at the vet.

His cancer caused him to drool down his chest and front

feet so we began bathing him every few days.

We thought it would upset him but he loved the

attention and grooming. He relaxed and chirped

and purred. He even enjoyed  the blow dryer.

He really mellowed out in the past two years.

Two Spot and Sam on the bed

Sam spent a lot of his last weeks snuggling with

Two Spot. Two Spot sat with Sam's body

for the longest time when I brought him back from the vet.

Sam being loved by Don with Two Spot and Smidge

I am glad Sam was able to experience living in the

house during his last years. He was a

tiny little old man cat in the end but much mellower.

On his last day,

he came out to the kitchen with the others

for breakfast but refused  food.

Instead he went to the office

sitting the sun for a

good long while by himself. He seemed to be

savoring

the moment. I knew it was time.

At the vets, we held him in our laps

and he seemed to slip away once they gave

him the sedative. I am sure he was

met by all of his siblings and cat mom to ferry him

to the Rainbow Bridge. Sam was buried next to

Callie on our land with catnip sprinkled over the

rainbow and unicorn fleece blanket that we used

to wrap his body.

I placed a bouquet of a single bright yellow

Gerbera Daisy

with evergreens on his grave. This flower and color

symbolizes the loyal love and friendship

he had with his cat family.

It was a wonderful pleasure for us to be

able to keep Sam and his

cat siblings together for all of their lives.

We will have a marker made at a later date.

We will love and remember our one of

a kind Sam forever. Give our love to our cat

family at the Rainbow Bridge. We will see you all soon.

Mancats on Monday

Mr Kitty here today.  We have been having a heat wave since June - most places in the 90s but we have been in the upper 80s instead cuz we are in the mountains.  Still hot.  I like it hot since I come from Massachusetts so I beg to go out on the porch and just bake in the sun. I lay sprawled out like a beached whale soaking up the sun! The humans won't let me stay out there except for early morning and later in the day so I don't overdo it.

Two Spot is out in the cat house and it is warmer there - it is built into the hillside so is cool in the indoor room and the porch is shaded with lots of fans.  Most days it is only 80 degrees out there.  If anyone looks too hot then the beans wet them down with cold water.  Al likes that!

Only loves the heat and lays out on the screen porch of the cat house in a stupor and he is in his glory!  Of course he doesn't mind getting wiped down with cold water either!

Norm or Normy as the beans call him is a shy guy and keeps to himself unless he is with Snowball who he adores! (I am not sure what THAT is all about.)  He comes out to the porch during the cooler parts of the day.

Now Woody shares life in the house with me.  Even tho he is a youngster at nine compared to the rest of us 15 plus year olds, he was brought in due to Al bullying him in the cat house.  He lives the life of Reilly now so he is the one who lucked out!

Snowball is the head honcho of the cat house and he knows it.  He and Al go at it a lot since Al thinks he is the head cat.  Al has his own room within a room out there but in the hot weather, the beans have kept Al's room open for anyone to come in and for Al to go where he wants.  So far they have been pretty peaceful.  The heat is enough to keep everyone's minds occupied elsewhere.

And then there is Sam.  He is the only one with a tipped ear.  He looked so much like Georgie and Norm that no one could tell him apart so the beans had the vet tip his ear when he was neutered.  He is the most reclusive one - is never out, always hiding in a box, cabinet or under a chair. He comes out for food - thus this shot!  If the beans can get their hands on him (when he is out eating) he loves petting.  Go figure!

And last but never least is our Al.  He is a charmer with the humans but a bully with the cats.  With his long furs he is minding the heat more than the others and loves to be wetted down - really soaked.  He has been very mellow too lately - maybe as he gets older he is finally chilling out.

Hope you have enjoyed this visit with all our mancats.  Maybe next week we can feature the ladycats.  Hint...hint.  *wink, wink*

P.S. For those of you not on Facebook, Georgie had to spend a day and overnight at the ER vet this weekend due to being severely constipated and blocked.  After several enemas, they got her opened up.  Being diabetic this is more challenging because she was vomiting and not eating.  The humans will now be vigilant in keeping an eye on her input and output -  when she uses the litter box, giving her lots of Miralx and making sure she eats plenty of food.  It is a challenge to monitor her this way with all of us to care for too.

With all of the huge vet bills we have accumulated for Georgie over the past month or so, we will be hosting an auction within the next few weeks (will keep you posted) and also have added a Wish List on Amazon for our essentials like food and medications.  Check it out and please share!

Thankful Mancat Monday

Snowball with Only behind him

Mom didn't get to post this last night as we had BAD storms and even a tornado watch - very scary!  The storms lasted until 2 in the morning and ended with one huge clap of thunder that sent us all into hiding.  It sounded like something got hit right over us but this morning nothing looked amiss.  So us mancats are very thankful nothing was damaged in our area last night.  Wishing you all a happy week!

Mancat Monday with the Whitesters

Hey ya'll Two Spot here today for Mancat Monday.  It has ben a while since Mom has posted regulatory but we will try to get her to get back on track.  Spring is here - NOT.  Been cold, rainy and today the sun is out but we have snow flurries.  Boo to that.  We are all out in our sun room catching the rays.

Snowball is losing weight and feeling fine.  He even has adjusted to no more dry food as have we all.

Al is up is usual shenanigans.  Even tho Pop made him a room within our sun room to lessen the stress between him and Snowball they still go at each other between the wire!  Oh well.

Only is his funny self. We love to cuddle and snuggle and enjoy being best buds and brothers.  He is a sucker for any attention.

Now Sam is our  loner who keeps to himself.  He hisses and growls whenever the beans come around and doesn't much like us either. but it is just bark and no bite.  Wish he would be a bit more friendly but that is just the way he is.

Hope you all have a great day and enjoy seeing some of us Whitesters more often (we  hope).

Whitester Mancat Monday

Sam here.  Since so many of our white cats are mancats, we thought we would feature them on our Monday posts.  Al (pictured above) is our resident deaf cat.  His magnificent blue eyes and long fur give him movie star presence but he does have a lot of personality issues being deaf.  He doesn't hear us coming and gets easily startled and attacks - not much fun but we don't seem to have figured out how not to sneak up on him.

This is me, Sam - I am a shy guy and don't like it when Mom gets that flashy box out. I am the only one with a tipped ear. Mom asked the vet to do this when I got fixed to help her tell us apart and to know that I had been neutered when we were still outside.  I don't mind - it gives me a rakish look.

This is Two Spot.  Some white cats are born with light black or grey markings on their heads that fade with age.  He had two so Mom named him Two Spot never thinking they would fade.  Now every asks how he got the the name and she has to explain.....

Hope you enjoyed visiting with us - we will bring the other whitesters out next Monday!

White Mancat Monday

Snowball here. It's time to focus on us white mancats this week...enough of the senior kitties! I am the head mancat (Al thinks he is but I know who is).

This is Two Spot, the hyper one of us. He zips around ...zip, zip, zip. Never stops!

Norm is the manly silent type...always there but very quiet and dignified!

Only is our special boy - he is very shy and loves his Mom. Whenever things get a little too busy here, he hides in the cabinet. You can here the bang, bang, bang of the door when he tries to get inside!

Al...is ....well, Al. He is pretty laid back these days, for him that is. We are going try one of those Calming Collars on him. Hope he lets the beans put it on him. We will keep you posted if it works..so many folks have said it was great. Keep your fingers (or paws) crossed!

And lastly of us white mancats is Sam..he is another quiet one. If you bother him in his hidy place he will hiss and growl but don't mind that. He is a sweety..just likes to be alone!

That is it for today. Mom and Pop have been busy replacing all the screens on our porch this past week. Mr. Bear torn a few of them last year trying to get in! Mom will try to catch up on her visiting...she is getting WAYYYYYY behind! Sorry about that. We cats take a lot of time to take care of!
